Komodo Tour From Lombok: The 4-Day Boat Trip, Honestly

A Komodo tour from Lombok means one specific thing, and it is worth being precise about it before you start comparing prices. It is a four-day, three-night boat that leaves Kayangan Harbour in East Lombok and drops you in Labuan Bajo on Flores. It runs one way, not as a loop. It costs between IDR 3,200,000 and IDR 7,750,000 per person depending on whether you sleep on a mattress under an open roof or behind a cabin door. And two of those four days are spent crossing open water, including one stretch of sixteen to eighteen hours that runs through the night.

There is also a direct flight that covers the same distance in seventy-five minutes. Most guides to this trip leave that out, so it belongs in the first paragraph rather than the last. If what you want is the four days between Lombok and Komodo, which include a bay full of whale sharks and two islands no flight passes over, the boat earns its fare. This guide exists to help you tell those two wants apart before you have paid a deposit.

Lombok To Komodo: Boat, Plane Or Ferry

Lombok and Komodo are separated by the whole of Sumbawa, which is a bigger gap than the map suggests. Three routes cross it, and they are not really competing with each other. One is a holiday, one is transport, and one is an endurance test.

One detail about the flight is worth knowing before you build an itinerary around it, because it catches people out. The schedule is lopsided. Around fourteen flights a week run Lombok to Labuan Bajo, departing between 11:05 and 14:30, but only about four a week come back the other way. Getting to Komodo by air is easy. Getting back to Lombok by air is a planning problem, and it is one reason the boat is more popular in this direction than the raw comfort argument would suggest.

The 4-Day Lombok To Flores Boat Trip, Day By Day

Every operator publishes a near-identical itinerary, and every one of them describes it in days rather than hours. The hours are where the surprises live, so this version uses them.

Day one: Kayangan Harbour to Kenawa Island

Pickup from hotels in Senggigi, Mataram or the Gilis starts late morning. Kayangan is a two to three hour drive east across Lombok, and boats generally cast off around 14:00. The first afternoon is the gentlest part of the whole trip: a couple of hours across the Alas Strait to a small island off western Sumbawa, usually Kenawa, for a swim and a walk up the grass hill behind the beach. Dinner is aboard. Depending on the boat you either sleep at anchor or wake up already under way.

Day two: Saleh Bay whale sharks, then the long crossing

This is the early start. Tenders leave for the bagan platforms in Teluk Saleh while it is still dark, because the whale sharks come for the baitfish under the lamps and drift off once the sun is properly up. You are back aboard for breakfast. Some itineraries add Satonda, a volcanic island with a saltwater crater lake a short walk up from the beach, or the Mata Jitu waterfall on Moyo. Then the boat turns east and the long crossing begins.

Day three: Padar, Pink Beach and the Komodo dragons

Land at last, and all of it at once. Padar first, usually at dawn, for the ridge walk over the three bays. Then the pink sand at Long Beach, the ranger-led walk through dragon country at Komodo Village, and a snorkel over the manta cleaning stations at Karang Makassar if the tide cooperates. It is a dense, excellent day, and it is also the reason people finish this trip saying they wish it had been structured differently.

Day four: Kelor or Manjarite, then into Labuan Bajo

A short morning. One or two easy snorkel stops on the way in, commonly Kelor or Manjarite, both within sight of Flores. Boats dock in Labuan Bajo between about 12:00 and 14:00. If you have a flight out the same day, build in more margin than feels necessary, because arrival times on this route are approximate in a way airline schedules are not.

The Saleh Bay Whale Sharks Are Not In Komodo National Park

Plenty of itineraries blur this, and it matters for two reasons. The whale sharks on this route are in Teluk Saleh, a bay on the north coast of Sumbawa, roughly two hundred kilometres short of the Komodo park boundary. Fishermen there anchor bagan platforms, floating structures with lamps that draw baitfish through the night. Whale sharks learned to come for the same fish, and they arrive before dawn while the lamps are still burning.

That arrangement is also why the encounter is argued about. On some boats the crew buy a bucket of fish from the bagan and feed the sharks to hold them near the surface for photographs. Other operators go out at first light and simply wait. If provisioned feeding bothers you, ask which one your boat does at the point of booking rather than at 05:00 on the morning, and know that you can stay aboard and skip the swim. Either way, nobody can promise you a sighting. These are wild animals and a dawn with empty water happens.

The second reason it matters is financial. The Saleh Bay swim carries its own fee of roughly IDR 200,000, paid to the bagan owners, and it has nothing to do with Komodo National Park. When an operator quotes you one bundled "park fee" that covers both, you are being quoted two different things added together.

The Overnight Crossing To Komodo Nobody Puts In The Brochure

After Saleh Bay the boat turns east and runs for the park. That leg is sixteen to eighteen hours of continuous open water, most of it overnight, through the Sanggar and Sangeang straits and on toward Sape. It is the longest unbroken stretch of sea on any popular Indonesian island-hopping route, and it is where this trip becomes either a good story or a cautionary one.

Three things make it harder than people expect. The engine and the generator run the entire way, so the noise never stops and the cabins nearest the stern get both the sound and the vibration. Deck class has no walls, which is lovely at anchor and miserable in spray. And these are wooden, shallow-draught boats with no stabilisers, so they roll rather than cut.

The practical advice is narrow and worth following. Take motion-sickness medication before you leave Saleh Bay, not once you start feeling it: most tablets need an hour or two to work and are close to useless after nausea has set in. Scopolamine patches suit people who know they are badly affected. If you have a cabin, pick one low and central rather than in the bow. If you feel it coming on, stay on deck in the air and watch the horizon instead of lying down below, which is the instinct and the wrong one.

Komodo Tour From Lombok Prices: Deck, Cabin Or Phinisi

Operators on this route price by where you sleep, and the gaps between classes are larger in practice than the fare difference suggests.

The number worth asking about is not the cabin count. It is the toilet count. Shared boats on this route routinely carry thirty to forty passengers, and reviews from 2026 describe thirty-two people sharing four heads on one of the better-known operators. Ask for both figures, and ask specifically whether a deck-class fare includes use of a cabin bathroom or only the shared marine toilets. An operator that answers those two questions crisply is telling you something useful about the rest of the boat.

Komodo National Park Fees In 2026, On Top Of The Fare

Almost every operator quotes a fare that excludes Komodo National Park, and the park changed how it charges in 2026. The change works in your favour if you have been reading older guides.

Foreign visitors now pay IDR 250,000 per person per day, and that is a flat rate seven days a week. The old weekend surcharge was scrapped for foreign visitors, so there is no longer a cheaper day of the week to go in. Indonesian nationals with a KTP pay IDR 50,000 on weekdays and IDR 75,000 on Sundays and public holidays, under the 2024 government regulation that set the current schedule.

One detail in that regulation saves people money and almost nobody mentions it. The entry ticket now bundles trekking, wildlife observation and snorkelling, which used to be billed as separate permits. If an operator adds a line for a snorkelling permit, that charge no longer exists. Diving is the genuine exception and still carries its own small daily surcharge.

Two days in the park works out to roughly IDR 600,000 to 700,000 per person once the ranger and harbour shares are divided up. Treat any operator quoting a single bundled figure of IDR 650,000 with mild suspicion: that number circulates widely on this route and usually turns out to have the Saleh Bay fee folded into it, which is not a national park charge at all. One more thing changed in 2026 and it catches boats arriving from Lombok more than anyone else. Since 1 April the park caps entry at 1,000 visitors a day across all sites and takes bookings only through SiOra, its official online reservation system. Walk-in tickets are gone. On this route the operator registers you, which means they need passport details days ahead rather than on the dock.

Komodo Island And The Dragon Walk On Day Three

The walk at Komodo Village is short, flat and guided, and it takes about an hour. You go in a group behind a ranger carrying a forked stick, which looks theatrical until you understand what it is for: the fork is used to steer a dragon’s head away, and rangers use it because the animals are ambush predators with no interest in performing. Most groups see several dragons, often resting near the ranger station where the shade and the smell of the kitchen are.

Two honest notes. The first is that dragons are less active in the hot middle of the day, so a boat that arrives at 11:00 sees fewer of them moving than one that arrives at 08:00, and on this route your arrival time is fixed by the crossing rather than chosen. The second is that the ranger fee is charged per group of up to five, so a couple travelling alone pays the same as five people would. On a shared boat the crew normally pool passengers into groups, which is one of the small ways a shared trip is cheaper than it looks.

When Boats Run, And Whether Komodo Island Closes In 2026

April to November is the working season. Most operators suspend the route in January and February for the northwest monsoon, and some use the gap to slip the boats for annual maintenance. April to June is the sweet spot: the islands are still green from the rains, the dragons are active, and the boats are not yet full.

The July 2026 Sinking On The Lombok To Komodo Route

This belongs in a guide to the trip rather than in a footnote, because it happened on this exact crossing and it shaped the rules that now apply to it. On 16 July 2026 a Golden Island Cruises vessel sailing from Lombok to Komodo took on water and sank with forty-four people aboard. Everyone was evacuated and nobody died. An investigation report given to survivors attributed it to waves of over two metres striking and holing the hull. Passengers described a long wait in a liferaft before another vessel picked them up, and the operator, having first promised to cover losses, later offered a fifty per cent refund of the ticket price.

Six days later the harbourmaster suspended Komodo and Padar routes for high waves. That is the context for the safety rules introduced after the separate December 2025 sinking, and it is why the questions below are worth asking out loud rather than assuming.

None of this means the route should be avoided. Tens of thousands of people sail it every season without incident, and the regulator has tightened up rather than looked away. It does mean that the operator you pick matters more here than on a day trip out of Labuan Bajo, and that a fare which undercuts everyone else is usually undercutting something real.

The August 2026 Earthquake At The Flores End

This route finishes on Flores, so the earthquake belongs in your planning even though it happened nowhere near Lombok. On 15 August 2026 a magnitude 7.7 quake struck off the north coast of Flores, about thirty kilometres from Nagekeo. The United States Geological Survey put it at 7.8. The provincial disaster agency’s consolidated count on 15 September 2026 gave 120 dead, 1,191 injured and more than 136,000 people displaced across seven regencies, with Manggarai and East Manggarai worst hit, and one of the larger aftershocks that night was centred forty kilometres from Labuan Bajo.

A tsunami warning was issued two minutes after the shaking and lifted two and a half hours later. The tide gauge at Labuan Bajo recorded thirty-six centimetres. Surveys later found run-up of up to 2.68 metres on exposed parts of the north coast, well east of the harbour, and no one was killed by the water.

For this trip specifically, three things matter. Komodo Airport stayed open throughout, with a damaged terminal ceiling and a cracked taxiway but a sound runway, so the flight out of Labuan Bajo was never the problem. Boat movements were suspended for roughly a day on 15 August, which left 986 people waiting on Padar until the afternoon. And Komodo National Park itself never formally closed; it was recording visitors again the following day.

Aftershocks are continuing but decaying sharply. The meteorology agency logged 15,722 of them in the first month, 190 of which were felt, dropping from around five thousand in week one to 864 in week five. Tremors were still being recorded in mid-September, concentrated inland near Ruteng rather than out among the islands. Emergency response status for the province runs to 26 September 2026, and while Labuan Bajo town is functioning normally, 22 tourist villages elsewhere on Flores were still closed in mid-September and dozens of hotels and restaurants across the island were damaged. That matters if you are continuing overland into Flores; it does not affect the Labuan Bajo and Komodo circuit. Labuan Bajo is operating normally; the parts of Flores still recovering are inland, which is not where this boat leaves you.

How To Pick The Best Komodo Tour From Lombok

This route is sold by dozens of small operators, and the gap between the best and worst of them is wider than the price gap. These are the questions that separate them, and a good operator answers all six without hesitating.

Who Should Not Book The Lombok To Komodo Boat

Being direct about this is more useful than another list of highlights. Skip the boat and fly if you get seasick on ferries, because the second night will be worse than anything you are picturing. Skip it if you need air conditioning to sleep, since only the top fare tiers reliably have it and even those cut the generator at night on some boats. Skip it if you are travelling with young children, where the shared sanitation and the overnight crossing cause more trouble than the islands are worth. Skip it if you have an international flight within a day of arrival, because the schedule has no give in it. And skip it if what you actually want is Komodo rather than the journey, which is a perfectly reasonable thing to want.

What To Pack If You Are On The Deck

Short list, all of it learned the hard way. Earplugs, because the generator runs through the night and this is the single item people most regret leaving behind. Motion-sickness tablets taken in advance. A dry bag for anything that must not get wet, since spray reaches the deck on the crossing. A head torch, because boats cut power at night. Enough cash for park fees, ranger shares and drinks, as there is no card machine and no bank between Kayangan and Labuan Bajo. Reef shoes for Padar and Pink Beach, where the entry is sharp. Your own mask and snorkel if you are fussy, and fins if you are, since most shared boats supply neither reliably. And a light long-sleeve layer, which matters more at 05:00 on a moving deck than any amount of sunscreen.

The Komodo To Lombok Boat Tour, Going The Other Way

We run this crossing in reverse, and the reasons are the ones set out above rather than a sales pitch. Lady Grace is thirty-four metres with ten cabins, which means twenty to twenty-five guests rather than the forty a shared deck boat packs in, and a bigger hull is a steadier one on the Sape and Alas straits. Running Flores to Lombok puts Komodo on days one and two while you are fresh, and finishes near the Gilis, which is where most people want to be at the end of a trip like this. It also visits Satonda and Moyo, which the standard Lombok departure often skips.
