Fort Belgica is the pentagon-shaped Dutch fort that looms over Banda Neira, built in the early 1600s to control the nutmeg islands and defend against rivals and the local Bandanese. Restored and open to visitors, you can climb its corner towers for a wide view over the town, the harbour, and the cone of Gunung Api across the water. It is the most complete colonial structure on the islands.
The fort is bound up with the darkest chapter of Banda's history, the period when the Dutch seized control of the nutmeg trade by force.
Come for the architecture and the view, but read up first, because the walls make a lot more sense once you know what happened here.
Getting there
The fort sits on a low hill within Banda Neira town, an easy uphill walk of about ten to fifteen minutes from the harbour and most guesthouses. There is no transport needed beyond your own feet. Ask your guesthouse for current opening hours, as they can be informal.
Best time
Go in the late afternoon when the heat eases and the light over Gunung Api and the harbour is at its best. Mornings are quieter and cooler if you prefer. Visit on a clear day for the full view across to the volcano.

There is usually a small entrance fee or donation collected by a caretaker, so carry some cash. Wear decent shoes for the worn stone steps and stairs up the towers, which have minimal railings. Bring water and a hat, as there is little shade on the ramparts.
