China to Indonesia: Flights, Visa and Connectivity in 2026

Indonesia has been quietly getting easier to reach from China. Guangzhou, Shanghai, Xiamen and Chengdu all fly direct to Bali, and since 11 July 2026 China Eastern has been running Beijing Daxing to Denpasar three times a week. That new capacity matters, because it turns Indonesia from a once-in-a-while trip into somewhere you can go twice: Bali first, then the islands most visitors never see. This guide covers the practical side in 2026, including the visa, and the connectivity problem that trips up more Chinese travellers than anything else.

Flights and fares

Bali (Denpasar) is the main gateway and every direct route feeds it. Southern departure points are usually cheaper: Guangzhou and Shenzhen tend to run several hundred yuan below Beijing and Shanghai for the same dates. Many itineraries still route via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, which can be cheaper again if you do not mind the connection.

Visa: you need one, unlike your ASEAN neighbours

This is the most common misunderstanding. Singapore and Malaysia enter Indonesia visa free; Chinese nationals do not. You need a visa on arrival, which costs 500,000 rupiah, roughly 190 yuan, and gives you 30 days. It can be extended once for another 30 days.

Bring a passport valid for at least six months with two blank pages, and proof of onward or return travel. Visa policy between the two countries can change, so confirm the current rule close to your departure date.

Connectivity: solve this before you leave China

This is the single most useful thing in this guide. Google Maps, Gmail, WhatsApp and Instagram are all blocked inside mainland China, and the websites you would use to download a VPN are usually unreachable from there too. If you land in Indonesia relying on a Chinese SIM roaming, you may find the apps everyone around you is using simply do not work.

The clean solution is a travel eSIM bought before departure. Because it routes through a foreign carrier rather than a Chinese one, Google Maps, WhatsApp and the rest work normally the moment you land. Install and activate it while you still have working internet at home. As a backup, download offline maps of Bali and wherever else you are going before you leave, and install any translation app you plan to use.

Once in Indonesia, Gojek and Grab are the standard way to get around cities and southern Bali, and they are cheap. Both verify by SMS, so register the accounts before you travel using your Chinese number, then use them over data once you arrive.

The currency is the rupiah, and one yuan is worth roughly 2,650 of them. Be aware that Alipay and WeChat Pay acceptance in Indonesia is growing but is not universal, so do not plan on paying with your phone the way you would at home. The local standard is QRIS, a national QR system, alongside cards in hotels and larger restaurants. Carry two to three hundred thousand rupiah in cash for warungs, boats, park fees and rural areas. Foreign card ATM withdrawals attract a local fee of roughly 25,000 to 50,000 rupiah.

When to go, and Golden Week

The dry season runs roughly April to October, the wet season November to March. Wet season usually means a heavy afternoon downpour rather than constant rain, but boat crossings get rougher and some are cancelled, which matters if Komodo is on your list.

The two Chinese travel peaks land very differently. Spring Festival Golden Week, 15 to 23 February 2026, falls in the wet season for Bali and Komodo. If those are your dates, consider Raja Ampat instead, which runs on the opposite cycle and is at its best from October to April. National Day Golden Week, 1 to 7 October 2026, sits at the tail of the dry season and is excellent for Bali, Komodo and Sulawesi.

Food, and what to expect

Indonesian food is rice-based and seafood-rich, so the foundations will feel familiar, but the flavour profile leans sweeter and spicier than most Chinese palates expect. Kecap manis, a thick sweet soy, appears in a lot of dishes, and sambal is served with almost everything and is genuinely hot. Ask for it on the side if you are not sure.

One ingredient worth knowing is terasi, a fermented shrimp paste that gives many sauces their depth and has a strong smell that surprises first-timers. Pork availability varies sharply by region: it is common in Hindu-majority Bali and rare in Muslim-majority areas. Larger cities, particularly Jakarta, have long-established Chinese-Indonesian restaurants if you want a familiar meal.

The second-trip case: go past Bali

Bali is a good first trip and a poor last one. With the new direct capacity, the more interesting question is where you go on the second visit. Komodo National Park is 75 minutes from Bali by air and delivers the dragons, Padar’s three-bay viewpoint and manta rays in one trip. Raja Ampat is further, via Sorong, and is the richest reef on Earth. Kelimutu on Flores has three crater lakes that change colour, and Java has Mount Bromo at sunrise.

Practical odds and ends

Plugs are the two-pin European type at 230V, and since mainland China uses a different standard at 220V you should bring an adapter. English is spoken in tourist areas but thins out quickly in villages, and Mandarin is understood in parts of Bali but not much beyond it, so a translation app earns its keep. Park fees are worth budgeting separately: Komodo charges IDR 250,000 entrance, plus IDR 25,000 harbour, plus a mandatory ranger fee per group; that is roughly IDR 400,000 all-in per foreign visitor on a weekday, and since April 2026 there has been a daily cap of 1,000 visitors with permits issued through the official system, so book ahead.
