When to visit Raja Ampat: why October to April is best, peak manta season December to March, the rough mid-year months, and when to book.
The best time to visit Raja Ampat is usually October to April if diving, snorkeling, and smooth boat days are the priority. The islands are warm all year, so this is less about temperature and more about wind, sea state, visibility, and which routes operators are willing to run.
This is the seasonal companion to our complete Raja Ampat guide. For what you will actually see in the water, read our Raja Ampat snorkeling guide.
Raja Ampat sits close to the equator, so rain can appear in any month and there is no clean Bali-style dry season. From roughly October to April, winds are usually easier, crossings are more comfortable, and the main dive/liveaboard season is active. November to March is often the most popular core; October and April can be good shoulder choices if you want a little more space.
When to visit Raja Ampat
The easiest planning window is October to April. Mid-year can still work for sheltered stays, but longer boat crossings are more exposed.
If manta rays are a major reason for the trip, aim for the main season and build in more than one water day. Many operators frame the stronger manta window around November to April or May, with December to March often treated as a peak period, but no site is a scheduled show. Current, plankton, boat timing, and wildlife behavior all matter.
June to September is not a hard closure, and some land-based stays still work well if you choose a sheltered area and keep plans local. The issue is exposure: smaller boats, longer crossings, and southern or remote routes can become less pleasant when winds rise. If your dream is Misool, a liveaboard, or several long day trips, avoid locking yourself into the middle of the windier season unless your operator specifically recommends it.
October, April, and parts of May are worth considering if your dates are flexible. The best homestays and liveaboards are under less pressure than in the core high season, and the sea can still be very workable. You may give up some peak-season manta probability, but you often gain quieter reefs and easier booking.
Book the peak season early
December to March is both the best diving window and the busiest, so good homestays and liveaboards fill months in advance. If you want the peak, reserve early; if you want it quieter, aim for October or April.
For the easiest first Raja Ampat trip, choose November to April. For fewer people, consider October or April/May with realistic expectations. For mid-year travel, keep the plan land-based and sheltered rather than route-heavy. Whenever you land, our snorkeling guide shows you where to get in the water, and you can plan your dates with us.
