Labuan Bajo, Flores

A cleaning and feeding station where reef manta rays cruise past snorkelers and divers.
Manta Point is a channel where reef manta rays gather to feed on plankton and visit cleaning stations on the reef. The mantas can span three to four meters across, and they glide and barrel-roll close to the surface, which means you often see them well while snorkeling, not only on scuba.
The same currents that bring the plankton make this an open-water site. There can be surge, chop, and noticeable drift, so you usually drop in, swim or float with the flow, and let the boat reposition to pick you up.
Mantas are wild and migratory, so numbers swing day to day. Some trips see several circling below; others see one passing shadow.
Getting there
Manta Point is a boat trip from Labuan Bajo harbor, included on many shared snorkel and dive day tours or reachable by private speedboat. Dive operators run it as a guided drift dive or snorkel. Komodo National Park fees apply, and divers typically pay an added daily diving fee on top of park and harbor charges.
Best time
Mantas can appear year round, with many operators reporting strong sightings in the wet-season months when plankton is rich, roughly December to February. Calmer mornings make the swim easier. Conditions and currents change fast, so trust your guide's call on timing.
Good to know
Keep a respectful distance, do not touch or chase the mantas, and stay flat and still so they approach on their own terms. Be honest about your swimming ability because currents here are real. A wetsuit or rash guard helps in cooler, choppy water.
Snorkeling works well here because mantas often feed near the surface. Diving gives more time at the cleaning stations, but you do not need a certification to encounter them.
Be cautious. The site is open water with current and chop, so confident swimming and a flotation aid help a lot. Tell your guide your comfort level before you get in.
No. They are wild and move with the plankton, so sightings vary from many to none on a given day. Going with experienced operators who track recent activity improves the chances.
