About Rangko Cave
Rangko is a cave on the Flores mainland, about an hour north of Labuan Bajo, with a pool of seawater at the bottom of it. When the sun is high a shaft of light comes through a gap in the roof and lands on the water, which is the reason to time a visit for the middle of the day rather than the morning. You climb down into the chamber and swim.
It is not in Komodo National Park, and that is part of why it stays quieter than anything inside the boundary. Reaching it means a drive north and a short boat hop, or a detour on the last morning of a longer liveaboard, so most day trips never come near it. The chamber is large, the water is clear and salty, and there is no infrastructure beyond a wooden platform and a rope.
Getting there
Two ways. By road, about an hour north from Labuan Bajo to Rangko village, then a ten-minute boat to the cave's landing. By sea, as a stop on the final morning of a four-day liveaboard, which is how our longer Komodo itineraries reach it. Either way the last stretch is a short walk over rough ground and a climb down into the chamber.
Best time
Between about 11am and 1pm, when the sun is high enough to send light through the roof opening onto the pool. Outside those hours the chamber is still impressive but the light is not. The dry season, roughly April to November, keeps the approach track passable and the water clearer.
Good to know
Wear shoes with grip. The floor is wet limestone and the descent uses a fixed ladder and a rope, which is straightforward but unforgiving of flip-flops. Expect to get your feet wet before you swim, and bring a dry bag for anything that must stay dry. There are no facilities at the cave itself, no lighting beyond the roof opening, and no shop, so carry water and take everything out again.

Swim in the saltwater pool
The water is clear, salty and deeper than it looks. This is the point of coming, and there is room for a group to be in it at once without crowding.
Time your visit for the light shaft
Around midday the sun comes through the opening in the roof and lands on the pool. An hour either side and the chamber is dim; get the timing right and it is the photograph everyone wants.
Stop at Rangko village on the way
The fishing settlement you launch from is a working village rather than a tourist stop, and the boat crossing gives you a look at the mangrove coast north of Labuan Bajo.

Can you actually swim inside the cave?+
Yes, and it is the reason to go. It is a limestone chamber with a saltwater pool at the bottom, deep enough to swim properly rather than wade. The approach is over wet rock and down a fixed ladder, so bring footwear with grip and expect wet feet before you get in.
Is Rangko Cave inside Komodo National Park?+
No. It is on the Flores mainland north of Labuan Bajo, outside the park boundary, which is why it has its own small local entry fee and why it stays quieter than the stops inside the park.
What time should I go?+
Aim for roughly 11am to 1pm. The light shaft through the roof opening only lands on the water when the sun is high, and it is what turns the chamber from interesting into memorable. Trips scheduled for early morning miss it.
Can I add it to a Komodo boat trip?+
On a longer itinerary, yes. Our four-day Komodo trips reach it by sea on the final morning, on the way back into Labuan Bajo. On a two- or three-day trip it is normally done separately by road from town.
