About Cunca Wulang Waterfall
Cunca Wulang is the one well-known trip out of Labuan Bajo that has nothing to do with boats, dragons or islands. It is a canyon in the hills inland from town where a river has cut smooth grey rock into a run of narrow walls and green pools. Locals describe it as a miniature Grand Canyon, which oversells the scale but captures the shape of the place.
The appeal is swimming through the gorge itself, moving between pools with rock rising on both sides, and jumping from the ledges into the deeper sections. It is a more physical, more playful day than the standard island loop, and it is a useful option when the sea is rough or you have simply had enough of speedboats.
Getting there means a drive of roughly an hour and a half to two hours followed by a walk of about 30 to 45 minutes through farmland and forest. The path is straightforward in dry weather and genuinely slippery after rain, crossing streams and dropping steeply towards the end. A local guide is the normal arrangement and is worth having, because the route is not obviously marked in places.
The river changes with the weather, and this is the part travellers underestimate. Water level, clarity and current all shift with recent rainfall, which means the depth beneath any given jumping ledge is not a fixed quantity. After heavy rain the pools turn brown and the current strengthens, and on those days the jumping should simply be off the table.
Getting there
Unlike the island sites, Cunca Wulang is reached overland, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by car or scooter west from Labuan Bajo towards Werang, then a guided walk of about 30 to 45 minutes down to the canyon. Most travellers arrange a car with a driver or join a small tour, which is simpler than riding it yourself on unfamiliar roads. A local entrance and guide fee is collected at the trailhead rather than any national park charge, so the Komodo park fees do not apply here. Bring cash in small notes, since there is no card payment at the trailhead.
Best time
The dry season, roughly April to November, gives clearer pools, gentler current and a far less slippery walk in. Mornings are cooler for the trek and you get the canyon before the day's groups arrive. Avoid periods of heavy rain, when the water turns murky, the current picks up and the trail becomes hard work.
Good to know
Wear shoes with grip that you do not mind getting wet, since the trail can be muddy and you will be walking on wet rock in the canyon. Bring drinking water, because it is a real walk in heat and there is nothing to buy once you leave the road. Only jump where your guide confirms the water is deep enough on that particular day, and treat that as a hard rule rather than advice. Levels change with rainfall and a ledge that was safe last week may not be safe today. If the river is running high or brown, skip the jumps entirely and enjoy the swim.

How do I get to Cunca Wulang from Labuan Bajo?+

Is it safe to jump into the pools?+
