Wide, easy-access waterfall southeast of Ubud with a swimmable pool and a busy viewpoint.
Tegenungan is a broad, powerful waterfall dropping into a wide pool in a green river gorge southeast of Ubud. Unlike many Bali falls, it sits at relatively low elevation and is one of the easier ones to reach, which is part of why it gets so busy.
From the car park you get a clifftop viewpoint, then a flight of concrete steps leads down to the river and the base of the falls. You can wade and swim in the pool, though the current near the cascade is strong after rain.
There are cafes, photo platforms and an Instagram swing on the rim. It is scenic but firmly on the tour-bus circuit, so do not expect solitude.
Getting there
Tegenungan is about 30 to 45 minutes south of Ubud toward Sukawati, reached by scooter, private driver or Grab. There is a large paid car park at the top, where you pay the entrance fee before walking down. Allow extra time in the late-morning rush.
Best time
Arrive at opening, around 7am to 8am, for thinner crowds and better light in the gorge. Visit in or just after the wet season for maximum flow, but be aware the water turns brown and the current strengthens after heavy rain.

Entry is around IDR 20,000 to 25,000, with a small extra charge if you climb to the upper viewpoint, cash only. The steps down are long and get slippery, so wear grippy shoes, and avoid swimming directly under the falls when the flow is heavy.

Yes, you can swim and wade in the pool at the base, but the current close to the cascade is strong, especially after rain. Stay clear of the main flow and watch your footing on the rocks.
It is a steep descent of a few hundred concrete steps to the river and back up. Take it slowly in the heat, as the return climb is the tiring part, and wear shoes with grip.
