A large, oddly shaped island where the wildlife went its own way. World-class diving in the north and southeast, elaborate funeral culture in the highlands, and long distances between all of it.

Sulawesi is the eleventh largest island in the world and the fourth largest in Southeast Asia after New Guinea, Borneo and Sumatra, covering roughly 174,600 square kilometres. Its shape, four long peninsulas around a mountainous centre, is the single most important planning fact about it: there is no quick way to get from one arm to another, and almost every itinerary that works involves flying between regions rather than driving.
The island sits inside Wallacea, the transition zone between Asian and Australian fauna that Alfred Russel Wallace identified, with the Wallace Line running through the Makassar Strait to its west. Long isolation did what isolation does. Of 127 known mammal species on Sulawesi, 72 are found nowhere else, an endemism rate of around 62 per cent, among the highest anywhere. The animals people come for are the anoa, a dwarf buffalo, the babirusa, a pig with upward-curving tusks, and the tarsiers of the northern forests.
Underwater it is just as unusual. Bunaken and Wakatobi are reef diving of the classic kind, while the Lembeh Strait is the opposite: black volcanic sand where the appeal is small, strange animals rather than scenery. Divers call it muck diving, and Lembeh is the site the term is most associated with.
Black sand muck diving in the north, the site most associated with the term. The appeal is unusual small animals, mimic octopus, frogfish, rare nudibranchs, not reefscape.
A marine park off Manado built around steep coral walls that drop away close to shore, which makes it unusually rewarding for snorkellers as well as divers.
Highland Toraja country, where elaborate multi-day funerals, cliff graves and tau-tau effigies form a living tradition. Visitors are often genuinely welcome, but this is a funeral and should be approached as one.
A remote marine national park in the southeast with a very high recorded coral species count, reached via Wangi-Wangi and generally visited as a dedicated dive trip.
Tangkoko in the north is the usual place to look for tarsiers, black crested macaques and hornbills. Anoa and babirusa exist but are forest animals and genuinely hard to see.
Karst islands and lagoons in the southeast, often compared to Raja Ampat for the scenery, reached by boat and usually done as a multi-day trip.
The east coast and the Banggai archipelago, home of the Banggai cardinalfish, which lives naturally in this one small area and nowhere else.
Cara ke sana
Makassar (UPG) in the southwest is the main national hub and the gateway for Tana Toraja and the south. Manado (MDC) in the north serves Bunaken and the Lembeh Strait. Luwuk (LUW) serves the Banggai region in the east, and Wangi-Wangi (WNI) serves Wakatobi in the southeast. Distances are the thing to plan around. Tana Toraja from Makassar is a long day on the road, usually eight to ten hours. There is an airport at Toraja, Buntu Kunik (TRT), but the service is thin: as of mid 2026 it is served only by Wings Air, only from Makassar, at around two flights a week. Check current schedules before you build a trip around it, and have the road journey as a fallback. Combining north and south in one trip means an internal flight, usually via Makassar. Budget a travel day for each transition and do not try to do the whole island in a week.
Waktu terbaik untuk berkunjung
The island is large enough that the seasons differ by region, which catches people out. For the north, Bunaken and Lembeh, conditions are workable year round, with the driest months roughly March to October. For Wakatobi in the southeast, April to June and October to December are usually the calmest. For Tana Toraja in the south, the drier months of roughly May to September make the mountain roads easier. Toraja funeral ceremonies, the reason many people visit the highlands, are concentrated in the July and August school holiday period. These are real funerals rather than performances, so the schedule is set by families, not by a calendar you can book from.
Tempat menginap
Dive resorts dominate where the diving does. Manado and the Lembeh Strait have a well-established cluster of resorts running daily guided boats, and most guests book a package with dives included rather than arranging things locally. Wakatobi is similar and more remote, so more of it is package-based. In Tana Toraja, Rantepao is the practical base, with guesthouses and mid-range hotels rather than resorts. Makassar is a working city rather than a destination, and one night on either side of a flight is usually all it earns.

For one region, four or five nights works. For two regions, for example Toraja in the south plus diving in the north, allow ten days or more, because each transition costs a travel day and usually an internal flight via Makassar.
In theory yes, in practice almost nobody does. The peninsulas radiate from a mountainous centre and the overland distances run to days, not hours. Flying via Makassar is the normal way to combine regions.
Bunaken is coral wall diving off Manado and works well for snorkellers too. Lembeh, nearby, is black sand muck diving where the point is small rare creatures rather than scenery. Wakatobi is a remote reef system in the southeast, usually a dedicated dive trip rather than an add-on.
Yes, Buntu Kunik (TRT), but the service is limited. As of mid 2026 it is served only by Wings Air from Makassar, at roughly two flights a week. Most visitors still drive from Makassar, which takes about eight to ten hours. Confirm current schedules before relying on the flight.

Most fall in the July and August period, but the dates are set by the families involved, not by a tourist calendar. No operator can guarantee you a ceremony on a given date, and you should be sceptical of one that says otherwise.
