The closest beach to Kuta town, with reef surf breaks and the Bau Nyale festival.
Seger is the beach just east of Kuta town, a short hop from the main strip, with soft sand, a grassy headland, and the Princess Mandalika statue looking out to sea. It is both an easy swim-and-laze beach and a surf spot, with a left and a right reef break working offshore for intermediate surfers.
Seger is also the heart of Bau Nyale, the annual Sasak festival tied to the legend of Princess Mandalika. Once a year around February or March, crowds gather here before dawn to catch nyale sea worms, with music, dance, and ritual.
On an ordinary day it is simply a convenient, pretty beach within walking or short-ride distance of town.
Getting there
Seger is only about a 5 to 10 minute scooter ride east of central Kuta, or a long walk along the coast. A track leads to a parking area behind the beach where a small fee is collected. The surf breaks are reached by paddling out, so non-surfers stay on the sand.
Best time
The dry season, May to September, gives the calmest swimming and cleanest surf. Time a visit for the Bau Nyale festival in February or March if you want the cultural spectacle, accepting big crowds. Sunrise from the headland is quiet and worthwhile.
Good to know
The reef breaks suit confident surfers rather than first-timers, who are better off at Selong Belanak. Bring cash for parking and reef shoes if you plan to explore the rockier edges of the bay.
