Southeast Asia's largest mosque, facing a cathedral, with free tours for visitors.
Istiqlal is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, a vast modern structure of white marble and stainless steel that holds around 200,000 worshippers across its main hall and courtyards. A single enormous dome sits above a prayer space ringed by simple rectangular columns, deliberately plain and open. A full renovation in 2019 to 2020 left the interior bright and spotless.
The symbolism here is deliberate. Istiqlal stands directly opposite the neo-Gothic Jakarta Cathedral, and an underground 'Tunnel of Friendship' now links the two as a gesture of interfaith coexistence.
Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times and are shown around by a volunteer guide who explains the building and Islam in Indonesia.
Getting there
Istiqlal sits at the northeast edge of Merdeka Square, an easy walk from Monas. Take the TransJakarta bus to the Istiqlal or Juanda stop, or the commuter KRL train to Juanda station nearby. Grab and Gojek drop you at the visitor entrance gate.
Best time
Visit mid-morning or early afternoon outside the five daily prayer times, and avoid Friday midday, when the mosque is busiest with congregational prayer. Tours run through the day; ask at the visitor desk on arrival.
Good to know
Entry is free, but a donation is appreciated and modest dress is required: long trousers or skirt, covered shoulders, and a headscarf for women (robes are lent free at the desk). You remove your shoes before the prayer hall, and a guide must accompany non-Muslim visitors throughout. Pair the visit with the cathedral opposite via the connecting tunnel.
Yes. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times and are guided around by a volunteer who explains the mosque. You must stay with the guide for the whole visit.
No, entry and the guided tour are free. A donation toward upkeep is welcomed but not required. Robes and headscarves are lent at no charge.
Yes. Jakarta Cathedral stands directly across the road, and an underground Tunnel of Friendship connects the two, so you can see both in one trip without crossing the busy street.
