A fine volcanic ash plain where wind hisses the sand across the ground.
Pasir Berbisik, the Whispering Sands, is the stretch of fine volcanic ash on the eastern side of the caldera, named for the sound the wind makes as it drags the loose grey sand across the plain. The name comes from a 2001 Indonesian film shot here. It is the most cinematic part of the sea of sand: a flat, open expanse of dust ringed by steep crater walls, often with ribbons of windblown ash skimming the surface.
Jeeps usually pause here on the longer tour for photos, with the bare plain and the caldera rim making a dramatic, almost lunar backdrop.
When the wind is up, the air fills with ash, so it can be as gritty as it is photogenic.
Getting there
The Whispering Sands is a stop on the four-location jeep tour, between Bromo crater and the savanna hills, out on the eastern ash plain. It is only included in the full package, not the basic sunrise-and-crater run. Your jeep driver knows the spot and will pull over for photos.
Best time
Mid-morning after sunrise, when the light rakes across the plain and the crowds have thinned, is the most atmospheric. The dry season keeps the sand firm and the air clearer, while wind picks up the ash most in the dry months. Avoid lingering here in strong wind.
Good to know
Bring a buff, scarf, or mask and sunglasses, because blowing ash gets into eyes, cameras, and lungs. Protect camera lenses when you swap them. As with the savanna, make sure your jeep tour is the four-stop version, since the shorter package skips this plain.
Wind blowing across the fine volcanic ash makes a soft hissing or whispering sound, which gave the plain its name (Pasir Berbisik in Indonesian). It was also the title of a film shot here.
It is included in the longer four-location jeep package alongside the savanna. The basic two-stop tour to the sunrise viewpoint and crater does not include it.
Yes. When the wind blows, fine ash gets everywhere, so shield your lens, avoid changing lenses in the open, and bring a cloth to wipe gear and a scarf for your face.
