Cave-and-cliff cove below the Uluwatu warungs, a surf-watching spot more than a swim beach.
Suluban, often called Blue Point, is a dramatic cove tucked beneath the cliffside warungs and surf shops at Uluwatu. You reach it down a maze of stairs and walkways squeezed between tall limestone walls, emerging into a chamber of caves and rock formations where the sea pushes in.
This is the access point and viewing area for the legendary Uluwatu surf break, so the lineup of cliff bars above is full of surfers watching the waves.
It is more a place to watch surf, take photos and have a drink with an ocean view than a beach for lounging. At high tide much of the sand disappears and the cave passages flood, so timing with the tide matters.
Getting there
Suluban is at the end of the road in the main Uluwatu surf area, a few minutes from most local accommodation by scooter or on foot. Park at the dead-end lot up top, pay the small parking fee, and walk down through the cliff staircases and the cave to the water.
Best time
Visit at low to mid tide, when the sand and cave passages are accessible and you can move around the rocks. Late afternoon into sunset is the classic time for the light and the surf, and also the busiest.
Good to know
There is no entrance fee, only parking of a few thousand rupiah. The stairs and cave floor are wet, uneven and slippery, so wear shoes with grip, and check the tide, as high water cuts off parts of the cove and the swim is not safe near the break.
No entrance fee, just a small parking charge of a few thousand rupiah for a scooter or car. Any other spending is on food and drinks at the cliff warungs.
Only with care, and not near the surf break, where the water is shallow over reef with strong currents. Most people come to watch the surf, explore the caves and take photos rather than swim.
At low tide you can walk through the caves and onto the sand, while at high tide the passages flood and much of the cove is underwater. Check tide times before you go.
