The Bohorok River runs right through Bukit Lawang, and tubing it is the classic way to cool off after a jungle trek. You ride a large inner tube, often several lashed together, bumping down stretches of mild whitewater with forest and village rising on both banks.
The river is fed from the mountains, so the water is cool and the current does the work. Some sections are gentle drifts and others are short, splashy rapids, with guides steering and fending off rocks. Many multi-day treks finish by floating back to the village this way.
Water levels swing with the rain, and after heavy downpours the river can run fast and brown, so trips are sometimes paused for safety.
Getting there
Tubing launches from points along the Bohorok in and just upstream of Bukit Lawang, arranged through guesthouses and guides in the village. Most trips include a short walk or ride to the put-in and a float back toward town. It is usually booked on the spot the day before.
Best time
The drier months, May to September, generally mean clearer, more manageable water and fewer cancellations. The river is best in the late morning once the day warms up. After heavy rain, levels rise fast, so follow local advice on whether it is running.
Good to know
Go with a guide rather than improvising your own tube, wear sandals with a strap, and leave phones and valuables behind or in a sealed dry bag. Skip it entirely if the river is high and fast after rain.
With a guide and normal water levels it is a fun, manageable float with some mild rapids. After heavy rain the river rises and speeds up, and responsible operators will postpone trips when it is unsafe.
Basic water confidence helps, and guides manage the tubes and route. Wear a strap sandal and follow your guide's instructions through the faster sections.
