Rolling green savanna hills inside the caldera, nicknamed for their soft Teletubby shape.
On the far side of the caldera from the volcanoes, the ash plain gives way to a wide grassland of low, rounded hills. Indonesians nicknamed it Bukit Teletubbies after the smooth green mounds in the children's show, and it is also called the Savana. The contrast is the appeal: after the grey moonscape of the sand sea, you suddenly arrive at soft green slopes ringed by steep caldera walls.
In the dry season the grass turns golden and dusty; after the rains it is properly green and the hills look their best.
This is usually the last stop on a full jeep tour, a place to walk, take photos, and breathe after the crowds at sunrise. It is calmer and more spacious than the other sites.
Getting there
Teletubbies Hill is reached on the four-stop jeep tour, beyond Bromo crater and the Whispering Sands, deeper into the southern part of the caldera. The standard sunrise jeep package that includes the savanna covers it; the shorter two-stop package does not. Confirm with your driver that the savanna is on your route.
Best time
The grass is greenest in and just after the wet season (roughly November to April), while the dry season leaves it golden and hazier with dust. Mid-morning, after the sunrise rush, the light is good and the area is quiet. Skies are generally clearer in the dry months overall.
Good to know
Make sure your jeep package is the four-location tour, as the cheaper option skips the savanna and Whispering Sands. There is no shade out here, so bring sun protection and water. Stay on the tracks and avoid trampling the grass, which the park is trying to protect.
The smooth, rounded green hills resemble the grassy mounds from the Teletubbies children's show, so locals gave it the nickname. It is also signposted as the Savana.
Only in the longer four-stop package that also covers Whispering Sands. The basic two-stop sunrise-and-crater tour does not reach it, so confirm your route when booking.
During and just after the rainy season, roughly November to April, the grass is lush green. In the dry season it turns golden brown and dustier.
