A long crescent of soft sand with mellow beginner waves and rows of surf schools.
Selong Belanak is the go-to beginner surf beach in south Lombok. The wave is slow and soft, breaks over a sandy bottom, and rolls in across a wide, shallow bay, so you get plenty of time to read it and pop up. Surf schools line the sand renting foam boards and running lessons by the hour.
Beyond the surf, it is simply a long, pretty crescent of white sand backed by green hills, with warungs and beanbags for non-surfers. Local cows sometimes wander the beach, which surprises first-timers.
The west end of the bay holds the gentlest whitewater for absolute beginners, while slightly bigger sets form further out for those progressing.
Getting there
Selong Belanak is about a 25 to 30 minute drive west of Kuta on a winding paved road, best reached by scooter, hired car, or Grab. The road in passes through several villages and over a small hill with a view of the bay. There is a parking area behind the beach with a small fee.
Best time
The dry season, May to September, gives the cleanest conditions and most reliable beginner waves in the morning before the wind picks up. Lessons run year-round, but mornings are calmest. Sunsets here are open and unobstructed.
Good to know
Board and lesson prices are negotiable, so agree on the rate and duration before you start. Rash guards help against both sun and board rub, and reef shoes are not needed since the bottom is sand.
