Labuan Bajo, Flores

A guided ranger walk to see the world's largest lizard in its own territory.
Komodo dragons live in only a handful of places on Earth, and the two main ranger-walk sites are Rinca Island, at Loh Buaya, and Komodo Island, at Loh Liang. The dragons grow up to three meters and are genuinely wild animals: ambush predators with serrated teeth, venom, and a powerful bite. This is not a zoo.
You walk in a small group behind a licensed ranger who carries a long forked stick and reads the animals' behavior. Routes range from short, flat loops to longer hill trails, and you may see dragons resting near the kitchen area, water buffalo, deer, and macaques.
Rinca tends to be quieter and the terrain more open. Komodo Island is larger with longer trail options.
Getting there
Both islands are a boat trip from Labuan Bajo harbor, on shared speedboat day tours or a private speedboat charter. A licensed park ranger is mandatory for every trek and joins you at the ranger station. Komodo National Park entry, ranger, and conservation fees apply and are layered, so carry cash to settle them on arrival.
Best time
Early morning is cooler for walking and dragons are often more active before the midday heat. The dry season, April to November, makes for easier trails. Note that nothing is guaranteed, as sightings depend on wild animals moving as they please.
Good to know
Always stay behind your ranger and keep the distance they set, and never walk off alone. Wear closed shoes and tell your guide if you have an open wound, as dragons track scent and blood. Move calmly and keep noise down near the animals.
It is reasonably safe with a licensed ranger and by following their instructions, but the dragons are wild and dangerous. The rules about distance and staying with the group exist for real reasons.
Rinca is usually quieter, closer, and more open, which makes for relaxed viewing. Komodo Island offers longer trails and a larger area, so pick based on time and how much walking you want.
No sighting is guaranteed because they are free-roaming wild animals, though they are frequently seen near the ranger stations. Dry season and morning visits improve your odds.
