Labuan Bajo, Flores

An inland canyon with green pools and rock ledges you can jump from into the water.
Cunca Wulang is the rare Labuan Bajo trip that has nothing to do with boats or dragons. It is a canyon inland from town where a river has carved smooth rock walls and dropped into a series of green swimming pools. Locals call it a mini Grand Canyon, and the appeal is swimming through the gorge and jumping from the ledges into the deeper sections.
Getting in means a drive followed by a walk of roughly 30 to 45 minutes through farmland and forest, which can be muddy and slippery after rain. A local guide is normal and useful here.
The water level and current shift with recent rainfall, and the jump heights vary, so check depth before leaping.
Getting there
Unlike the island sites, Cunca Wulang is reached overland, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by car or scooter west toward Werang, then a guided walk down to the canyon. Most travelers arrange a car with driver or a tour from Labuan Bajo. A small local entrance and guide fee applies at the trailhead rather than the marine park fees.
Best time
The dry season, April to November, gives clearer, calmer pools and safer, less slippery trails. Mornings are cooler for the walk in. Avoid heavy-rain periods when the water turns murky and the current strengthens.
Good to know
Wear shoes with grip for a trail that gets muddy, and bring water, since it is a real walk in heat. Only jump where your guide confirms the water is deep enough, and skip the jumps entirely if the river is running high or brown.
It is an overland trip, about 1.5 to 2 hours by car or scooter, followed by a guided walk of 30 to 45 minutes. Arranging a driver or small tour is the simplest option.
It can be, but only where a guide confirms the water is deep enough that day. Levels change with rainfall, so never assume a ledge is safe without checking.
It is strongly recommended. The trail is unmarked in places and slippery, and a local guide handles the route, the entrance fee, and pointing out safe spots to swim and jump.
