Labuan Bajo, Florès

A long volcanic island east of Bali, best known as the gateway to Komodo but far more interesting once you keep driving east. Crater lakes, cone-roofed villages and a single winding highway that takes most of a week.

Flores is a narrow volcanic island in East Nusa Tenggara, running roughly 350 kilometres west to east. Most travellers only see its western tip: they fly into Labuan Bajo, board a boat for Komodo and Padar, and fly out again. That is a legitimate trip, and for a lot of people it is the right one. It is also a small fraction of the island.
The rest of Flores is reached by one road. The Trans-Flores highway links Labuan Bajo in the west to Maumere in the east over about 660 kilometres, and it is almost continuously winding through mountains. Average speeds of 35 to 45 km/h are normal, which is why operators quote five to seven days minimum for the full crossing, and seven to ten if you want to stop rather than just pass through. Treat any itinerary that promises the island in three days as a driving holiday.
Flores is also the most visibly Catholic part of Indonesia, a legacy of Portuguese and later Dutch missionary presence, and that shows up in village churches, Easter processions and the rhythm of the week. It makes the island feel different from Java or Bali in a way that has nothing to do with landscape.
The reason most people come. Day boats and multi-day trips leave Labuan Bajo for the dragons on Rinca and Komodo, the Padar viewpoint and the reefs in between.
Three crater lakes on one volcano near Moni that hold different colours and change over time as their mineral chemistry shifts. The colours are genuinely unpredictable; nobody can promise you a particular combination.
A mountain village of cone-roofed Mbaru Niang houses at around 1,100 metres, reached on foot from Denge in roughly three to four hours. Its rebuilding project won the top UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage prize, the Award of Excellence, in 2012. Note that is a conservation award, not World Heritage listing.
Highland country around Bajawa with traditional Ngada villages such as Bena, laid out around ancestral stone formations, under the cone of Mount Inerie.
The crossing itself is the attraction for some travellers: 660 kilometres of mountain road, rice terraces and coastline, done in stages over a week.
A quiet marine park on the north coast, a common overnight stop between Bajawa and Ende for snorkelling and island hopping without the Labuan Bajo crowds.
Comment s'y rendre
Labuan Bajo (LBJ) in the west is the main gateway, with direct flights from Bali and Jakarta, and it is where almost all Komodo boats leave from. Ende (ENE) sits in the middle of the island and is the practical airport for Kelimutu. Maumere (MOF) serves the east. The usual mistake is to fly into Labuan Bajo intending to reach Kelimutu overland and back within a few days. Do not. If Kelimutu is the priority, fly into Ende and work outward, or fly into one end of the island and out of the other rather than doubling back. Overland, the standard staged route runs Labuan Bajo, Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende or Moni, then Kelimutu, exiting via Ende or Maumere.
Meilleure période pour visiter
April to October is the dry season and the practical window for both the boats in the west and the mountain roads in the east. July and August are the busiest and the most expensive around Labuan Bajo. The wet season, roughly November to March, brings landslides and closures on stretches of the Trans-Flores highway, and rougher seas for Komodo crossings. Kelimutu is often clouded in at sunrise year round, so treat a clear view as luck rather than a booking.
Où loger
Labuan Bajo has by far the widest range, from backpacker rooms to genuinely expensive resorts on the hills above the harbour, and it is the only place on the island where booking well ahead in July and August really matters. Moving east, accommodation gets simple fast. Ruteng, Bajawa, Moni and Ende have guesthouses and small hotels rather than resorts, and that is the ceiling. Wae Rebo is a homestay in the village itself, sleeping communally in the traditional houses, and it is booked through the village rather than a platform.

Yes, but not in a few days. They sit at opposite ends of a 660 kilometre mountain road, and the overland crossing takes five to seven days at minimum. The realistic options are to allow a week or more, or to fly between Labuan Bajo and Ende rather than drive.
Labuan Bajo (LBJ) for Komodo and the west, Ende (ENE) for Kelimutu and the centre, Maumere (MOF) for the east. If you plan to cross the island, flying into one end and out of the other saves days over doubling back.
No, and the distinction matters. Its Mbaru Niang houses won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award of Excellence in 2012 for the community-led conservation work. That is a heritage award, not inscription on the World Heritage List.
Three or four days covers Labuan Bajo and a Komodo boat trip. A week is the honest minimum if you want to reach Kelimutu overland. Ten days lets you stop in the highlands rather than drive through them.
It is paved for most of its length and used daily, but it is narrow, steep and constantly winding, and landslides close sections during the November to March wet season. Most visitors hire a car with a local driver rather than self-drive, which is what we would suggest.
