Grassy ridge of bald green hills dropping to a narrow blue arm of Lake Toba.
Bukit Holbung is a line of treeless, grass-covered hills on the mainland side of Lake Toba, sometimes called the Teletubby hills for their smooth green humps. A short uphill walk from the parking area takes you onto a ridge with the lake on both sides, a long blue channel of water curling between the slopes far below.
The hills are open and exposed, with little shade, which is exactly why the views are so wide. Photographers come for the layered ridgelines, and there is space to wander along the crest.
It sits off the southwestern side of the lake, away from Samosir, so it works best for travellers exploring the wider Toba region by car rather than as a quick hop from Tuk Tuk.
Getting there
Bukit Holbung is near Janji Maria on the mainland southwest of the lake, roughly 1 to 2 hours by car from the Tuk Tuk side depending on ferry connections and route. There is no useful public transport, so a chartered car or scooter is needed, and the final stretch is a rough rural road. From the car park a steep 15 to 30 minute walk leads up to the ridge.
Best time
Early morning or late afternoon gives the best light and cooler walking on the shadeless hills; sunrise is popular with photographers. The dry season keeps the grass walkable and the views clear, while wet weather can make the climb slippery.
Good to know
There is a small entry fee and almost no shade, so bring water, sun protection, and shoes with grip for the steep grass. Wind on the ridge can be strong, so secure hats and loose gear.
It is a short but steep climb of around 15 to 30 minutes on a grass and dirt path. It is manageable for most people with reasonable fitness, but the lack of shade makes it feel harder in midday sun.
Not especially. It is on the mainland southwest of the lake, an hour or two away with a ferry or long road link, so it suits travellers touring the wider region by car rather than a quick trip from Samosir.
From the ridge you look down on a narrow arm of Lake Toba winding between rows of bare green hills, with layered ridgelines on both sides. The open, treeless terrain gives unobstructed views in every direction.
