The famous star-lagoon viewpoint, reached by a built staircase of around 300 steps.
Piaynemo is the more accessible cousin of Wayag and the viewpoint that fills Raja Ampat postcards. From a wooden platform at the top you look out over a tight cluster of green karst islets divided by channels of pale water, including the small star-shaped lagoon that gives the area its nickname.
Getting up is far easier than Wayag. A built staircase of roughly 300 steps with handrails climbs from the jetty to the platform, so most reasonably mobile people manage it, though it is still a sweaty haul in the heat. There is a small fee collected locally at the jetty.
The surrounding water is good for snorkeling, and Piaynemo pairs naturally with the nearby Telaga Bintang lagoon.
Getting there
Reach Raja Ampat by flying to Sorong, then ferrying to Waisai on Waigeo. Piaynemo sits in the Fam island group and is usually visited by speedboat on a day trip or homestay tour, a boat ride of a couple of hours from the Waisai area depending on your base. The marine-park entry tags and a small local platform fee apply.
Best time
The drier, calmer months of roughly October to April make the boat ride smoother and the colors brighter. Arrive earlier in the day to beat both the heat on the stairs and the busier midday boat groups.
Good to know
The 300-odd steps have handrails but are steep, so take water and pace yourself in the humidity. Bring small cash for the local entry fee at the jetty, and pack your snorkel gear to use the reef below afterward.
Around 300, built with handrails from the jetty up to the viewing platform. It is steep and hot but manageable for most reasonably mobile visitors, unlike the rough scramble at Wayag.
Both are karst-island viewpoints, but Piaynemo is much closer to Waisai and reached by a built staircase, while Wayag is far north and involves a steep rock climb and a long boat trip.
Yes, a small local entrance fee is collected at the jetty, separate from the Raja Ampat marine-park tags. Carry small notes of cash, as card payment is not available.
