Baie de Saleh, Sumbawa

An A-frame reef break near Hu'u offering both lefts and rights over shallow coral.
Lakey Peak is the headline wave on Sumbawa's south coast, an A-frame that breaks left and right off the same takeoff over a shallow reef. It is the centre of a cluster of breaks around the village of Hu'u, with Lakey Pipe, Periscopes, and Nungga all within paddling or a short walk along the bay.
The Peak handles size and gets hollow, drawing experienced surfers who want punchy, consistent waves without Bali's crowds. A row of simple losmen and warungs lines the beach, so you can roll out of bed and check the lineup.
This is a reef break, so it suits confident intermediates and up rather than first-timers.
Getting there
Hu'u sits on Sumbawa's south coast, roughly 3 hours by car from Bima airport or a similar drive from the Sape ferry. Most surfers arrange a private transfer or charter, as public transport is patchy and the last stretch is rural. From the Hu'u accommodation strip the breaks are a short walk or paddle.
Best time
The main season runs May to October, with June to September the most consistent for size and clean offshore winds. A southwest swell with east-southeast wind lines the Peak up best.
Good to know
The reef is shallow and unforgiving, so bring booties, a spare leash, and a basic first-aid kit. Respect the lineup pecking order and check the tide, as low water exposes the coral.
Not really. It is a shallow reef break best for confident intermediate and advanced surfers, though nearby beginner-friendly spots exist on smaller days. Beginners are better served by lessons elsewhere first.
The dry season from May to October, with June to September the most reliable for swell and offshore mornings. The wet months can still deliver but are far less consistent.
Lakey Pipe, Periscopes, and Nungga all break within the same bay near Hu'u, so you can move between them depending on swell, wind, and tide.
