Jakarta's 132m marble obelisk with a gold flame and a city-view deck near the top.
Monas is the 132-metre marble tower at the centre of Jakarta, topped by a flame sheathed in gold leaf. Commissioned by Sukarno to mark the independence struggle, it stands in the middle of Merdeka Square, a large open park surrounded by the presidential palace, ministries, and the National Museum.
An elevator runs up the shaft to an observation deck just below the flame, with a wide view over the city's haze and high-rises. A limited number of deck tickets are sold each day and the lift queue can be long, so this is the part that tests your patience.
In the base is a history museum with dioramas of Indonesia's past, and the surrounding park is a popular spot for joggers and families.
Getting there
From central Jakarta, take the TransJakarta bus to the Monas or Monumen Nasional stop, or the MRT to Bundaran HI and continue by bus or a short ride. Grab and Gojek drop you at the park edge. The entrance is via an underground tunnel from the northeast corner of the square.
Best time
Arrive at opening (around 8am) to get observation-deck tickets before the daily quota runs out and before the lift queue builds. Monas is closed on the last Monday of each month. A clear morning gives the best view, as afternoon haze often rolls in.
Good to know
Buy a JakCard (about IDR 50,000) on arrival, as the complex is cashless and tickets cannot be paid in cash. Deck access is limited per hour and cannot be pre-booked, so if it is sold out you can still visit the base museum. There is little shade on the walk in, so bring water and a hat.
Foreign visitors pay roughly IDR 30,000 to 55,000 for the observation deck, plus the museum, paid by JakCard. You must buy a JakCard (around IDR 50,000) first, as the site does not accept cash.
No. Deck tickets are sold same-day at the counter with a daily quota and an hourly visitor limit, so they can sell out. Arrive early to secure a slot.
On a clear morning the view over Jakarta is good, though the city is low-rise and hazy rather than dramatic. If the deck is sold out or the queue is very long, the base museum and park are still a reasonable visit.
