Timang is a rugged stretch of the Gunung Kidul coast where a small rocky island sits just offshore, separated from the mainland by a channel of crashing waves. Local fishermen built a wooden gondola, a basket strung on cables and hauled across by hand, to reach the island for spiny lobster. Today visitors can ride it across the surf for the thrill and the view back at the cliffs.
Alongside the gondola there is now a suspension rope bridge to the same islet, which feels less extreme but sways above the same churning water.
The beach itself is coral and rock rather than a swimming bay, and the sea here is powerful, so the draw is the crossing and the dramatic coastline, not lazing on sand.
Getting there
Timang is roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by road east of Yogyakarta. The last few kilometers are a rough track that ordinary cars cannot manage, so you either ride a local 4x4 jeep or ojek (motorbike) shuttle from the drop-off point, or arrange a tour. Each gondola and bridge crossing is paid separately on site.
Best time
Come in the dry season, April to October, when seas are a little calmer and the track is not muddy. Mornings are cooler and clearer; by midday the cliffs offer little shade. Crossings may be paused if the swell or wind is too strong.

Budget for several separate fees: the jeep or motorbike shuttle over the rough road, plus the gondola ride and the bridge, each priced per person. Bring cash, wear shoes with grip on the wet rock, and know that operators decide when conditions are unsafe to cross.
