A bright sandbar that rises out of the sea at low tide and vanishes when the water comes up.
Pasir Timbul, which simply means appearing sand, is a bar of pale sand that surfaces in the middle of open water as the tide drops. For a few hours you can stand on a ribbon of beach with sea on every side, no trees and no land in sight, then watch it shrink and disappear as the water rises again.
There is nothing to do here but wade, swim, and take in the strange feeling of a beach with no island attached. Bring a snorkel and you may find small fish around the shallows where the sand meets deeper water.
Because it lives and dies by the tide, timing is everything, and your boat crew will plan the visit around the low.
Getting there
Reach Raja Ampat by flying to Sorong, then ferrying to Waisai on Waigeo. Pasir Timbul is visited only by boat as part of a day tour, often combined with Piaynemo or nearby reefs, and the trip is scheduled around the tide. The marine-park entry tags apply.
Best time
Go around low tide, when the sandbar is at its largest; outside that window there may be little or no sand to stand on. The drier, calmer months of roughly October to April make the boat ride smoother.
Good to know
There is no shade, no fresh water, and no facilities, so bring sun protection, a hat, and your own water. Keep an eye on the rising tide and your boat, and use reef-safe sun cover to protect the surrounding water.
Only around low tide, when the sandbar surfaces. As the tide rises it shrinks and eventually disappears, so visits are timed to the low and your boat crew will plan accordingly.
Not much beyond wading and swimming, which is part of its appeal. Bring a snorkel for small fish near the drop-off, and treat it as a short, scenic stop on a wider day trip.
None at all. It is bare sand surrounded by sea, so bring sun protection, a hat, and drinking water, and do not plan to linger through the heat of midday.
Add it to a route across Indonesia and we will work out the travel time and cost between every stop.
