Grassy clifftops above Tanjung Aan with wide ocean views and a popular sunset.
Merese Hill, or Bukit Merese, is the run of grassy headlands rising straight above Tanjung Aan bay. A short walk up the open slopes opens out to ocean on three sides, with the curve of Tanjung Aan on one flank and rugged coastline stretching toward the horizon on the other.
It is best known as a sunset spot, when the dry-season grass turns gold and the crowds gather near the cliff edges. By day the hill is hot and exposed with almost no shade, so most people time their visit for the cooler late afternoon.
The cliffs are unfenced and the edges drop away sharply, so it is worth keeping back from the rim, especially in wind or with kids.
Getting there
From Kuta it is a 15 minute scooter ride east, just past Tanjung Aan, where a track leads up to a parking area at the base of the hill. From there it is a 5 to 10 minute walk up the grass to the main viewpoints. Combine it with a swim at Tanjung Aan below.
Best time
Late afternoon into sunset is the reason to come, with softer light and cooler air. The dry season, May to September, has the golden grass and clearest skies. Avoid the middle of the day, when it is harsh and shadeless.
Good to know
Bring water, sun cover, and a head torch for walking back down after dark. Stay well clear of the unfenced cliff edges, particularly in strong wind, and watch your footing on loose, dry grass.

It is a short, easy 5 to 10 minute walk up open grassy slopes from the parking area. There is no shade, so heat is the main challenge rather than steepness.
The clifftops are unfenced with steep drops, so keep a safe distance from the edge, especially in wind or with children. Bring a torch if you stay for sunset.
