Classic black-sand slopes where mimic and wunderpus octopus headline the critter list.
TK and Aer Prang are two of Lembeh's signature muck slopes, often dived back to back. TK is short for Teluk Kembahu, the bay near Kembahu village, and its sandy slope runs from about 5 meters down past 20.
These are the sites people come to for the cephalopods. Mimic octopus and the closely related wunderpus are highlights here, along with coconut octopus carrying shells, ornate ghost pipefish, and cockatoo waspfish drifting like dead leaves. Aer Prang offers more of the same rich, empty-looking sand that hides so much.
Like all Lembeh muck diving, the bottom is dark volcanic sand rather than coral, with gentle current. It rewards slow searching and is squarely aimed at divers and macro shooters.
Getting there
Both sites are in the Lembeh Strait off Bitung, around 90 minutes by car from Manado followed by a short boat crossing handled by your Lembeh resort or dive operator. Local dive centers run them as guided muck dives, frequently paired in one outing.
Best time
Critters are present all year, with calmer surface conditions around June to October. The strait stays diveable in most weather thanks to its sheltered position.
Good to know
Trust your guide to spot the octopus, which are masters of disguise and quick to vanish into holes. Keep your fins high to avoid clouding the silt, carry a torch to light up burrows, and watch where you settle since waspfish and stonefish lie buried in the sand.
TK is short for Teluk Kembahu, meaning Kembahu Bay, named after the nearby village. The sites are sometimes numbered TK 1, 2 and 3 along the same stretch of slope.
The octopus. Mimic and wunderpus octopus are the big draws, alongside coconut octopus, ghost pipefish, and waspfish on the open sand.
Yes, the slopes are shallow with usually gentle current, so they suit most certified divers. Good buoyancy matters so you do not stir up the silt and lose the critters.
