The T-Rex headland and a brutal stairway down to white sand far below.
Kelingking is the limestone headland shaped like a crouching dinosaur, with a thin spine of green running out to the "head" and a strip of white sand at the base. Almost everyone comes for the view from the clifftop, where a railing and a couple of warungs sit right at the edge.
The path down to the beach is the catch. It is a steep, eroded scramble with flimsy wooden rails, loose rock, and exposed sections. Going down takes most people 30 to 45 minutes and the climb back up is a sweaty grind in full sun.
The water at the bottom has strong surf and rip currents. People wade, but it is not a calm swimming bay.
Getting there
From the Toyapakeh or Banjar Nyuh harbor area it is roughly a 45 to 60 minute drive on rough, narrow roads, either by hired car with driver or rented scooter. Most visitors fold it into a west-coast loop with Angel's Billabong and Broken Beach. Parking is at the clifftop and you walk in from there.
Best time
Arrive before about 9am or after 3pm to dodge the heaviest tour-bus crowds and the midday heat, which is punishing on the climb. The dry season, April to October, has the firmest footing on the descent.
Good to know
Only attempt the descent in real shoes with grip and bring more water than you think you need, because nothing is sold partway down. If the steps are wet or you are unsure on heights, enjoy the top viewpoint and skip the climb.
It is genuinely steep and exposed, with rough steps and basic handrails, taking 30 to 45 minutes down and longer back up. Skip it if you have knee, balance, or height concerns.
The surf and rip currents are strong, so it is not a safe swimming spot. Most people only paddle at the edge and watch the waves rather than going in.
There is a small local parking and access fee at the clifftop, separate from the island retribution levy of about IDR 25,000 paid at the harbor. Bring some cash and a card, as the island is moving to cashless payment.
