A natural rock channel that fills with green water at low tide, right beside Broken Beach.
Angel's Billabong is a tidal channel carved into the rock shelf on Penida's west coast, where seawater pools into a long green basin between the cliffs. At low tide the pool looks calm and people photograph it from the rim and edges.
It sits a few minutes' walk from Broken Beach, so the two are almost always visited together. The walk in is over uneven rock with no shade.
This is a place to be careful. The open ocean is right there, and rogue waves have swept people off the rock shelf and out of the pool, sometimes fatally. Watch the sea, do not climb into the basin when swell is running, and never turn your back on the waves.
Getting there
From the Toyapakeh harbor area it is about a 45 minute drive west by car with driver or scooter, on the same loop as Kelingking and Broken Beach. Park at the shared lot and walk in across the rock platform. A small access fee usually covers both Angel's Billabong and Broken Beach.
Best time
Go at low tide on a calm day, when the pool is at its clearest and the rock shelf is safest. Check tide times before setting out and avoid days with big swell. Early morning has softer light and fewer people.
Good to know
Never enter the pool or stand near the ocean edge when waves are surging, as people have been swept out here. Wear shoes with grip on the slick rock, and treat any warning signs or local advice seriously.
Only in very calm, low-tide conditions, and even then with great caution. Rogue waves have pulled visitors out to sea, so when there is any swell you should stay well back and not get in.
They are a few minutes' walk apart on the same stretch of coast and share a parking area and access fee. Almost everyone sees both in one short visit.
At low tide, when the water settles and turns clear green. At high tide or in swell the basin churns and is dangerous, so timing the tide matters.
