A sea temple on a tidal rock, famous at sunset and heavily commercialised around the gates.
Tanah Lot is a Hindu sea temple built on a rocky outcrop just off the coast northwest of Canggu. At low tide you can walk across the wet rock to the base, where a priest may offer a blessing with holy water; at high tide the rock is cut off and the temple sits alone in the surf. Non-Hindus cannot enter the temple itself, so the experience is about the setting and the silhouette against the sky.
It is one of Bali's most photographed spots, and it is busy and commercial. A long market arcade of souvenir stalls and food vendors lines the walk from the car park to the shore.
Sunset is the signature moment, when the temple darkens against an orange sky, and it is also the most crowded.
Getting there
From Canggu it is roughly 30 to 45 minutes by car or scooter heading northwest, longer in the late-afternoon rush toward sunset. Most travellers drive, ride a scooter, or book a Grab or driver for the round trip. There is a large paid car park, then a walk through the market arcade to the temple.
Best time
Late afternoon into sunset is the classic visit for the silhouette, but it is shoulder to shoulder then. Check the tide: low tide lets you walk out to the rock, while high tide leaves the temple stranded and more dramatic from a distance.
Good to know
Foreign visitors pay an entrance fee (around IDR 75,000 for adults in 2025), so bring cash. Arrive a little before the sunset peak for parking and a viewpoint, dress modestly, and treat the holy-water blessing and 'guardian snake' stalls as optional, tip-based extras.
No. The temple itself is reserved for Balinese Hindu worship, so non-Hindus cannot enter the inner shrine. You can walk to the base at low tide and view it from the surrounding clifftops and shore.
Foreign visitors pay roughly IDR 75,000 per adult (less for children), plus a small parking charge, as of 2025. Bring cash, as card payment is not reliable at the gate.
It is iconic and photogenic at sunset, but it is also very touristy and lined with souvenir stalls. Manage expectations, go for the setting and the silhouette, and consider arriving slightly off the sunset peak.
