Reef-break surf, dark volcanic sand, and a clifftop row of bars for the sunset shift.
Echo Beach, locally Pantai Batu Mejan, sits at the western edge of Canggu's beach strip. The headline is the surf: a left and right reef break that fires on a mid to higher tide and pulls a confident intermediate crowd. The sand is dark grey volcanic, not gold, and the shoreline is rocky in places, so this is more a surf-and-watch beach than a swim-and-laze one.
Above the break runs a line of warungs and beach bars with terraces angled at the water. By late afternoon they fill with surfers and a sundowner crowd, and the energy is loud rather than mellow.
Swimming is poor to risky here because of the reef and currents, so most non-surfers come for the view and the food.
Getting there
From central Canggu (Batu Bolong) it is about 10 to 15 minutes by scooter heading west, longer in the afternoon traffic crawl. Most people ride a scooter or book a Gojek or Grab; there is paid parking near the warung strip. The final lane is narrow and busy, so go slow.
Best time
Surf works best around mid to high tide; check a tide app before you go. For atmosphere, arrive an hour before sunset to grab a terrace seat, though that is also the busiest window.
Good to know
This is a reef break for surfers with some experience, not a beginner spot or a safe swimming beach. Bring cash for the warungs, watch your footing on the rocks, and expect prices a notch above a regular warung.
It is not a good swimming beach. The break is over reef with rocky sections and currents, so most visitors come to surf or to eat and watch the waves rather than swim.
No. It is a reef break suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. Beginners should learn on the sand-bottom beach breaks at Batu Bolong or Berawa first.
Yes, the clifftop strip of bars and warungs is a popular sunset spot with food and drinks. Just expect a busy, social scene rather than a quiet beach.
