Kelingking is the limestone headland on Penida's south-west coast that ended up on every Bali poster: a thin green spine of cliff running out to a rounded head, with a strip of white sand roughly 180 metres below. Almost everyone comes for the clifftop, where a railing, a car park and a few warungs selling nasi goreng and cold coconuts sit right on the rim. Ten minutes there and you have seen the thing people fly in for.
The path down is the part visitors underestimate. It has been rebuilt with proper steps and handrails and is in far better shape than the rope-and-bamboo scramble of a few years ago, but it is steep, fully exposed and unshaded. Around twenty minutes down if you are moving well, thirty or more back up, and a good number of people turn around halfway.
There is also an unfinished glass lift on the cliff face, and it confuses people. Construction began in 2024, Bali authorities suspended it in October 2025 over permit and spatial-planning breaches, and a demolition order followed in November 2025. As of mid-2026 the structure is still standing, unfinished, carrying nobody, while the developer's case works through the courts. Do not plan around riding down.
The water at the bottom is the other thing to take seriously. The bay faces open ocean, the shorebreak dumps hard and rips run out fast. Swimming is prohibited after repeated drownings, and the rule is not decorative. People wade at the edge, photograph the cliff from the sand and leave. If the viewpoint is all you manage, you have lost very little.

From Toyapakeh or Banjar Nyuh harbour it is roughly 45 minutes to an hour by car with driver or by scooter. Penida's main roads have improved a great deal, but sections are still narrow, steep and patched, and a scooter in the wet is not the place to learn. Most visitors fold Kelingking into a west-coast loop with Angel's Billabong and Broken Beach, which means arriving at the same time as everyone else. Parking is on the clifftop with a short walk in to the viewpoint. Klungkung Regency began moving the Nusa islands to cashless e-ticketing during 2025, so carry a card as well as cash: the island retribution levy (around IDR 25,000 per adult as of 2026) and site fees are increasingly collected digitally at the harbour and gates rather than in notes.

Aim to be at the rim before about 9am or after 3pm. Day boats from Sanur land mid-morning and the viewpoint is at its most packed roughly 11am to 3pm, which is also when the climb is hottest with no shade anywhere on the steps. The sand at the bottom sits in cliff shadow until mid-afternoon, so photographers often prefer late while walkers should go early. The dry season, April to October, gives the firmest footing and the least mud on the upper section.

Attempt the descent only in shoes with real grip, and carry more water than you think you need, because nothing is sold below the rim. Be honest with yourself at the top: if the steps are wet, if heights bother you, or if it is the middle of the day, stop at the viewpoint. There is no shame in it and the view is the same one on the postcard. Stay out of the surf at the bottom, no matter how inviting the sand looks. The warungs on the rim sell drinks and simple food and the toilets are basic, so use them before you start down rather than after.
