A sheltered east-coast cove with rock arches offshore and calmer water than its neighbors.
Atuh sits on the same headland as Diamond Beach, round the corner and facing a scatter of rock stacks and arches standing out in the sea. It is the softer of the two: a proper curve of sand, warungs under the trees, umbrellas and deckchairs for hire, and water that is usually calmer than anywhere else on this coast.
Getting down is a concrete staircase of around 166 steps. It is a much easier proposition than Diamond's carved cliff route, about ten minutes at a steady pace, though the steps are unevenly spaced and the climb back is still work in the heat.
The rock formations offshore give the place its character. At low tide you can wander out across the shallows towards them, and the biggest arch lines up with sunrise if you are prepared to be there that early. Unlike Diamond, Atuh takes sun all day, which makes it the better afternoon half of the pair.
Calmer is not calm. Atuh receives the same open swell as its neighbour, just at an angle, and the water can turn messy inside a day. Look at the sea before you get in, stay well inside the bay, and do not read the deckchairs as a sign of lifeguards, because there are none. The other reason to come is what sits above the sand: the clifftop path leads to the Thousand Islands viewpoint, where a pair of small bamboo tree houses look north along a coast of stacks and islets. Plenty of visitors find that view, not the beach, is what they actually remember about the day.

From Toyapakeh or Banjar Nyuh harbour it is roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter east by car with driver or by scooter, on the same run as Diamond Beach and the Thousand Islands viewpoint. The final stretch is narrow and winding, and the whole east coast is best done as one half-day rather than squeezed in. Atuh shares the clifftop car park and access charge with Diamond Beach, collected once at the top. As across the Nusa islands since 2025, payment is moving to cards and e-tickets, so bring both a card and small notes. Warungs on the sand and at the top take cash.

Early morning is calmest on the water and best for the arch at sunrise, but Atuh works well as the afternoon half of an east-coast day, since it keeps its sun while Diamond falls into cliff shadow. Avoid the middle of the day if you can, when the tour vans arrive and the staircase gets busy in both directions. The dry season, April to October, gives the most settled sea and the clearest view of the offshore rocks.

Judge the surf before you swim rather than assuming Atuh is safe because it looks gentler than Diamond. Conditions change day to day, there are no lifeguards, and the safest water is close in and inside the bay. The deckchairs and umbrellas are rented, so agree the price before you sit down. Bring water and sun cover for the stairs, and give yourself half an hour for the Thousand Islands viewpoint on the clifftop, which is the part most people wish they had allowed time for.
