Penida's most swimmable beach, with shade, soft sand, and reef close to shore.
Crystal Bay is the one Nusa Penida beach where you can put a towel down and actually swim. It is a wide, west-facing curve of soft sand with palms and pandan for shade, sunbeds and warungs behind, and a small rocky island sitting out in the middle of the bay. On a normal morning the water is flat enough for children to paddle in and clear enough to see the bottom from the surface.
The reef starts close in, so you can snorkel straight off the sand with no boat: coral gardens towards the right of the bay, reef fish in numbers, and turtles often enough that they stop being a surprise. Masks and fins are rented from the warungs, though quality varies wildly and your own kit is better.
It is also a serious dive site. Boats moor off the beach and, in the cold upwelling months of roughly July to October, divers drop to cleaning stations at 20 to 40 metres hoping for mola mola, the oceanic sunfish. Water at that depth can fall to around 18 to 20C, which catches out people who have only dived warm Bali. Sunfish are why a lot of divers come to Penida at all, and they are still down to luck.
The caveats are worth stating plainly. Current picks up sharply beyond the line of moored boats and in the channel between the sand and the island, and this is where swimmers get into trouble. Stay inside the boats. By late morning the day tours arrive in force and the bay stops being peaceful. It is also the best sunset on the island, west-facing with the rock in silhouette, by which time most of the crowd has gone.

行き方
Crystal Bay is roughly fifteen to thirty minutes west of Toyapakeh harbour by car or scooter. The road is paved the whole way and, potholes aside, is one of the easier drives on Penida, which makes this a realistic stop even on a short visit. Parking is behind the beach with a small charge (a few thousand rupiah for a scooter as of 2026) and a short walk through the warungs to the sand. Klungkung has been tightening how water activities are charged as well as how they are paid for: the island retribution levy applies to every visitor, and snorkelling within the marine area has attracted a separate daily permit. Ask your boat or dive operator exactly what is included rather than assuming, and carry a card alongside cash.
ベストシーズン
Early to mid-morning for swimming and snorkelling, when the water is calmest and clearest and before the day-trip boats and buses land. Late afternoon is the other good window: quieter again, and the best sunset on Penida, since the bay faces west. For divers hoping for mola mola, aim at the cold upwelling season of roughly July to October, peaking around August and September, and accept that sightings are never promised.

Stay inside the line of moored boats. The current in the channel between the beach and the rock island is stronger than it looks and is where rescues happen. Watch the reef on the right-hand side at low tide too, where there is very little clearance over the coral. Bring your own mask if you have one, keep children within arm's reach, and carry cash for the warungs and sunbeds even though official fees are moving to card. If you want the beach at its best, come early, leave when the boats arrive, and come back for sunset.
Yes, it is the most swimmable beach on Nusa Penida, with calm shallow water close to shore on most mornings. Stay inside the line of moored boats, as current strengthens in the channel towards the rock island.
Yes. The reef is reachable straight off the sand, which makes it the easiest shore snorkel on the island. Conditions are best in the calm morning hours, and gear can be rented from the warungs, though quality is inconsistent.
Roughly July to October, peaking around August and September, when cold upwellings bring oceanic sunfish up to diveable depths. They appear at 20 to 40 metres at cleaning stations, so this is scuba only, water can be around 18 to 20C, and sightings are never guaranteed.
There is no separate beach ticket, only a small parking charge. The Nusa islands retribution levy applies to every visitor, and snorkelling inside the marine area has attracted a separate daily permit, so confirm with your operator what your tour price covers.
It fills up from late morning, when day tours from Bali arrive and boats moor off the sand. Early morning and late afternoon are noticeably quieter, and sunset is both the calmest and the best-looking part of the day.
Yes, and it is the best on the island. The bay faces west with the rocky islet in the middle, so the sun sets across the water in front of you. Most of the day-trip crowd has left by then.
