A fine volcanic ash plain where wind hisses the sand across the ground.
Pasir Berbisik is the expanse of fine volcanic ash on the eastern side of the caldera, flat and open and ringed by steep crater walls, where the wind drags ribbons of grey dust across the ground. The name is not geological. It comes from the Indonesian film Pasir Berbisik, directed by Nan Achnas and starring Dian Sastrowardoyo, which was shot on location here in the early 2000s. The tourism name followed the film rather than the other way round.
As a stop it is a photograph rather than an activity. Jeeps pull over on the longer packages, everyone gets out for ten or fifteen minutes on the bare plain with the caldera rim behind them, and then you move on. The scale is genuinely striking, particularly in the raking light an hour or two after sunrise when most of the sunrise crowd has already gone back to bed. Whether you can actually hear the sand whisper is another matter. Local tourism copy asserts it, nobody has measured it, and on a still morning there is not much to hear at all.
What you will notice is the ash itself. When the wind gets up, the plain throws grit into eyes, camera bodies and lungs, and the fine grey dust works into every zip and seam. It is worth knowing that this stop is only on the longer four location jeep package. The basic sunrise and crater run does not come out here, so if the ash plain is the shot you want, check the itinerary before you book rather than assuming it is included.

行き方
Whispering Sands is reached only by jeep, as part of the four location package that runs on from the sunrise viewpoint and the crater out onto the eastern ash plain. The two stop package does not include it. Operator listings for 2026 put a four stop jeep at roughly IDR 650,000 to 700,000 and a five stop package including Penanjakan 1 at around IDR 750,000, per jeep for up to six people, against about IDR 550,000 for the basic two stop run. Your driver knows the spot and will pull over for photographs. Park entry is the same compulsory online TNBTS booking used for the rest of the caldera, with no separate ticket for this stop.
ベストシーズン
Mid morning after sunrise is the most atmospheric window, when the light rakes low across the plain and most of the sunrise crowd has already headed down. The dry season keeps the sand firm underfoot and the air clearer, though it is also when the wind lifts the most ash. On a genuinely windy morning the plain is unpleasant rather than photogenic, and it is fine to stay in the jeep.
知っておきたいこと
Bring a buff, scarf or mask and a pair of sunglasses. Blowing ash finds eyes and lungs quickly, and it is abrasive on camera gear, so change lenses inside the vehicle rather than out on the plain. There is no shade and nothing sold here. Most importantly, confirm your jeep package is the four location version. Plenty of people book the cheap sunrise run, assume the ash plain is included, and find themselves back at the guesthouse by 8am wondering where it went.
The name comes from the 2000s Indonesian film Pasir Berbisik, directed by Nan Achnas and shot on location here, rather than from any documented acoustic phenomenon. Tourism copy describes wind hissing across the ash, but this is asserted rather than measured.
No. It is only on the longer four location jeep package, alongside the savanna. The basic two stop tour to the sunrise viewpoint and the crater does not come out to the eastern ash plain, so check the itinerary before booking.
Usually ten to twenty minutes, long enough for photographs. It is a viewpoint stop rather than somewhere you walk or explore, and there are no facilities, shade or vendors.
No. It sits inside Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and is covered by the same compulsory online park ticket as the crater and the sunrise viewpoints, so there is nothing extra to pay at the stop itself.
Often not. Strong wind lifts fine ash across the whole plain, which gets into eyes, lungs and cameras and flattens the visibility that makes the place worth photographing. On those mornings it is reasonable to stay in the jeep.
