The classic Bromo sunrise viewpoint, looking down on the volcanoes from the crater rim.
Penanjakan is the high viewpoint on the northwest rim of the Tengger caldera, and the source of nearly every famous Bromo photo. From the platform you look down across the sea of sand to the smoking cone of Bromo, the symmetrical peak of Batok beside it, and the bulk of Semeru puffing on the horizon. At sunrise the whole scene emerges from mist as the light turns gold.
It is also the busiest spot in the park. Hundreds of jeeps converge before dawn, and the main viewpoint can be shoulder to shoulder.
If the top platform is jammed, jeeps and guides know lower viewpoints (often called King Kong Hill or Penanjakan 2) that offer a similar angle with fewer people.

From the base villages of Cemoro Lawang or Tosari, the standard way up is a shared or private 4x4 jeep, arranged through your guesthouse the night before. Jeeps leave around 3am to 3:30am for the bumpy climb up to the viewpoint in time for first light. Walking up is possible but long and cold in the dark.

Sunrise is the whole point, so a pre-dawn 3am start is unavoidable. The dry season (April to October) gives the clearest skies and the best odds of a cloud-free view; the wet season often socks the viewpoint in with cloud. Weekdays are far less crowded than weekends.

Dress for genuine cold, it can drop near freezing at the rim, so bring a warm jacket, hat, and gloves, or rent a jacket and hire blankets at the top. Warm drinks and snacks are sold from stalls. Get out of the jeep quickly to claim a spot, or ask your driver for a quieter secondary viewpoint.
Jeeps typically depart Cemoro Lawang or Tosari around 3am to 3:30am to reach Penanjakan before sunrise. Your guesthouse arranges the jeep the evening before.
