Bromo Crater

After sunrise the jeep drops you on the Lautan Pasir, the sea of sand, and from there Bromo is a walk rather than a climb. The cone stands at about 2,329 metres and sits in the middle of the caldera, so the crossing of the ash plain takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes on foot, past the small Hindu temple of Pura Luhur Poten, or a shorter ride on one of the horses waiting near the parking area. The final section is a concrete stairway. Counts of the steps vary between about 245 and 250 depending on the source, and no authoritative figure exists, so about 250 is the honest answer.

At the rim you stand at a railing above a grey, sulphur streaked vent that hisses steam and smells of rotten eggs. The railing covers only part of the lip. Past it the ground falls away with nothing in between, and the edge is loose ash, so this is a place to plant your feet and look rather than to shuffle backwards composing a photograph.

One thing to understand before you book. As of July 2026 Bromo sits at alert Level II (Waspada), and the standing recommendation from Indonesia's volcanology agency at that level prohibits activity within one kilometre of the active crater, naming the stairway directly, because of the risk of a sudden steam driven eruption with no warning. Tour operators keep selling the crater climb as a routine part of the day and Indonesian travel media keep describing it as normal. Both cannot be true at once. Check the current status through the Magma Indonesia service or with the park office rather than assuming that a guide waving you up the steps means the volcano is open.
