Small cove reached through a slot in the cliff, famous from Eat Pray Love and often packed.
Padang Padang is a short, pretty cove on the Bukit Peninsula reached by descending a staircase and squeezing through a narrow gap in the limestone cliff, which opens onto the sand. It is small, and at busy times the beach is shoulder to shoulder with sunbathers, vendors and day-trippers.
The beach featured in the film Eat Pray Love, which cemented its fame. Just offshore is the famous Padang Padang reef break, a heavy, hollow left that is for experienced surfers only and the venue for international competitions.
For swimmers it is a place to wade and watch the surf rather than a quiet beach day. Come early or accept the crowds.
Getting there
Padang Padang is on the main Uluwatu road, about 10 to 20 minutes from most Uluwatu and Bingin accommodation by scooter or car. Park in the roadside lot near the bridge, pay the small entrance fee, and take the cliff staircase down to the sand.
Best time
Arrive early, soon after the 7am to 8am opening, for space on the sand and gentler light before the crowds and heat. Low tide gives more beach; the surf break works best on a solid swell and is for experts only.
Good to know
Entry is a small fee of around IDR 15,000 plus parking, cash only. The cliff stairs and the squeeze through the rock can be slippery and tight, and the beach is genuinely small, so go early or late if you want room to spread out.
A small fee of around IDR 15,000 per person plus a parking charge, as of 2025. Bring cash, as there is no card payment at the gate.
No. The Padang Padang reef break is a powerful, shallow, hollow left for experienced surfers only and hosts pro competitions. Beginners should surf elsewhere; here you can swim and watch from the sand.
It can be, especially midday in high season, because the cove is small and very popular. Come close to opening or in the late afternoon for more space.
