Luwuk Banggai, Sulawesi central

Luwuk's easy in-town beach, calm bay water and sunken statues a short swim out.
Locals call this beach Kilo Lima because it sits about 5 km south of Luwuk's center, measured from the old post office. It faces into Luwuk Bay with Banggai Island out on the horizon, so the water stays calm and the shallows are clear enough to see coral from the surface. A few underwater statues sit a couple of metres down and have become the local photo and freedive spot.
It is a town beach, so expect warungs, weekend crowds, and an easy-going scene rather than wilderness.
This suits travelers who want a quick swim, a sunset, or a casual snorkel without leaving Luwuk.
Getting there
Kilo Lima is about 5 km south of central Luwuk, roughly a 10 to 15 minute drive by scooter, ojek, or car along the main coastal road, and a similar hop from Luwuk's airport. It is one of the easiest spots to reach in the whole region, with no boat needed. Any small entry or parking fee is paid in cash on arrival.
Best time
Late afternoon into sunset is the nicest time, when the bay light is soft and the heat drops. For snorkeling, come on a calm morning at higher tide for the clearest view of the statues and coral.
Good to know
Bring your own mask if you want to see the submerged statues, since they sit just a short swim from shore. Weekends and evenings draw local crowds, so go on a weekday morning for a quieter swim. Keep valuables with you and tidy up after yourself.
Because it is about 5 kilometers from the center of Luwuk, and locals named it for that distance. Lima means five in Indonesian.
It is easy and fun rather than world-class. The calm bay water lets you see coral and the famous underwater statues a short swim from the beach.
Yes, it faces the bay and is a popular place to watch the sun go down, with warungs nearby for a drink or a snack.
