Black-sand muck site famous for hairy frogfish and other oddball critters, not coral.
Hairball is one of Lembeh's most loved muck sites, and the name comes from the hairy frogfish that turn up here in every color, white, yellow, black, and the fuzzy ones that look like a clump of algae with fins. The question among photographers is usually how many, not whether.
Do not expect pretty reef. This is a dark, sloping bottom of volcanic sand and scattered debris, which is exactly what the rare critters like. Beyond frogfish, divers find flamboyant cuttlefish, mimic and wunderpus octopus, ghost pipefish, and waspfish hiding in plain sight.
It is slow, eyes-down diving in shallow water with little current, built for macro photography and patient observation rather than scenery.
Getting there
Hairball lies in the Lembeh Strait off the town of Bitung, which is about a 90 minute drive from Manado, then a short boat crossing run by your Lembeh resort or dive operator. Almost every Lembeh dive center includes Hairball in its rotation as a guided muck dive.
Best time
Lembeh dives year round and critters appear in every season. The drier, calmer months around June to October bring easier surface conditions, though the strait can be muck-dived in most weather.
Good to know
Go with a spotter, since the guides here find camouflaged critters most divers would swim straight past. Master your buoyancy so you do not stir up the silt, take a torch even by day, and never move or bait animals for a shot.
Not really. It is a deep, dark sand slope with tiny camouflaged critters, so you need scuba and a guide to find them. Snorkeling over it shows you very little.
That is the point of muck diving. The black volcanic sand and scattered debris are the habitat that rare critters prefer, so you trade reef scenery for unusual animals.
No, but most people who love Hairball are into macro photography or close critter watching. If fast-moving reef and big fish are what excite you, this site may feel slow.
