Batu Bolong is the centre of gravity in Canggu. The wave is a long, mellow beach and reef break that suits longboarders and improving surfers, which is why most of the area's surf schools run their lessons here. The sand is dark volcanic grey, and a Hindu temple sits right on the beach beside the lineup.
The scene is as much a draw as the surf. Old Man's bar anchors the sand, beach clubs and cafes back the shore, and from late afternoon the whole strip turns into a sunset gathering with drinks, music, and a wall of people taking photos.
It is busy, social, and not the place for solitude, but it is the easiest beach to dip into the Canggu rhythm.
Getting there
Batu Bolong is the heart of Canggu, so from most local accommodation it is a short scooter ride or walk. Berawa is about 10 minutes east and Echo Beach a similar hop west. Parking near the beach entrance is paid and fills up fast around sunset.
Best time
Mornings are calmer and better for a surf lesson before the crowd and wind build. Sunset is the social peak, lively but packed, so come early if you want a spot on the sand or a table.

Lessons and board rentals are easy to arrange on the beach, but agree the price first. Watch for surfers when you swim, keep an eye on your belongings on the busy sand, and dress respectfully near the beachside temple.
