Steep-staircase cove of warungs and reef surf, more laid-back than its Bukit neighbours.
Bingin is a small cove on the Bukit Peninsula reached by a long, steep flight of stairs down a cliff packed with guesthouses, cafes and surf warungs. At low tide a band of white sand and rock pools opens up below the reef; at high tide the sea climbs almost to the bottom of the buildings.
The Bingin reef break is a fast, hollow left that draws competent surfers, and watching it from a warung with a cold drink is half the appeal.
It has long had a more relaxed, slightly bohemian feel than Padang Padang, though development on the cliff has grown. Note that authorities have moved to clear some illegally built structures here, so the cliffside is in flux.
Getting there
Bingin is signposted off the main Pecatu road, about 10 to 15 minutes from the Uluwatu surf area by scooter or car. Park at the top of the cliff, pay a small parking fee, and walk down the steep staircase through the warungs to the sand.
Best time
Come at low tide, when the sand and rock pools are exposed and you can walk the beach and swim more safely. Sunset from a cliff warung is the signature experience; mornings are quietest for the descent and a calmer beach.
Good to know
There is no entrance fee, only a small parking charge, cash only. The staircase down is long and steep and tiring on the way back up, so wear proper footwear, and time your visit to low tide since high water leaves very little beach.
No entrance fee, just a small parking fee of a few thousand rupiah at the top of the cliff. Everything else is food, drink and accommodation on the cliffside.
It is a long, steep staircase winding through the cliffside warungs, so it is a workout, especially climbing back up in the heat. Wear shoes with grip and take water.
It is best at low tide, when you can swim in pockets away from the reef and explore rock pools. The break itself is a fast reef left for experienced surfers, not for beginners or casual swimmers.
