A sheer coral wall off Friwen island, dense with soft coral and easy to snorkel.
Friwen Wall is a vertical reef face that drops along the edge of little Friwen island, not far from Waisai. The wall is packed with soft coral, sea fans, and sponges, and because it falls away steeply right near the surface, you can hang at the top with a snorkel and look straight down a living cliff full of fish.
Its proximity to Waisai and the gentle entry make it a popular first or last stop, and a good option on days when the long northern crossings are off. Schooling fish, turtles, and reef fish are common along the face.
The nearby Friwen village has homestays, so some people base here for easy repeat snorkeling on the wall.
Getting there
Reach Raja Ampat by flying to Sorong, then ferrying to Waisai on Waigeo. Friwen lies a short boat ride from Waisai (well under an hour by speedboat), reached on a day trip or via a Friwen homestay transfer. The marine-park entry tags apply across Raja Ampat.
Best time
The calmer months of roughly October to April give the smoothest conditions and clearest water. Slack or incoming tide keeps drift gentle along the wall, so check timing with your boat or homestay.

Stay off the coral and keep your fins clear of the wall, since the face sits close to the surface and is easily damaged. Watch for current running along the wall and plan to drift with it, and use reef-safe sun cover.
