A wide horseshoe bay with two textures of sand and calm, shallow turquoise water.
Tanjung Aan is the big horseshoe bay just east of Kuta, known for a quirk of geology: one half has fine white sand and the other has coarse, peppercorn-sized grains that locals call pepper sand. The water inside the bay is shallow and usually calm, which makes it one of the easier south-coast beaches for an actual swim.
Warungs line the back of the beach selling coconuts and grilled fish, and a small headland between the two sand textures gives a quick view over the whole curve. Vendors selling bracelets and sarongs do work the sand, so a polite, firm no goes a long way.
The bay sits directly below Merese Hill, so the two pair naturally in one trip.
Getting there
From Kuta it is a 10 to 15 minute scooter ride east on a paved road, or a short drive by car or Grab. There are several access points around the bay, each with a local parking attendant. Expect a small parking fee of roughly IDR 5,000 for a scooter or IDR 10,000 for a car.
Best time
The dry season, May to September, brings the calmest, clearest water and reliable sun. Mornings are quiet and good for swimming before the afternoon sells-and-vendors picks up. The light is best for photos in the late afternoon.
Good to know
Bring small cash for parking and a coconut, and water shoes if you have sensitive feet, since the coarse pepper-sand side can be uncomfortable to walk on. Vendors can be persistent, so decide what you want before you sit down.
Yes. The bay is shallow and generally calm, which makes it one of the more swim-friendly beaches near Kuta. Conditions are gentlest in the morning during the dry season.
One end has standard fine white sand and the other has unusually coarse, rounded grains often called pepper sand. The two textures meet near the small central headland.
There is no official ticket, only a small parking fee collected by locals, around IDR 5,000 to 10,000. Warungs on the beach sell drinks, coconuts, and simple meals.
