Whale Sharks in Gorontalo: Botubarani Prices, Season and Rules

Whale sharks turn up at Botubarani, a fishing village about 10 kilometres and thirty minutes east of Gorontalo city, and they come extraordinarily close in: around 25 metres from the beach, near enough that you can swim out to them rather than ride anywhere. A boat for up to three people costs IDR 100,000 (about $6). That is the whole proposition, and it is why this is one of the cheapest places on earth to get in the water with the largest fish alive.

Sightings run through much of the year and peak between May and July, when local guides report the most animals. Four at once is the best anyone describes; one is more typical; none is possible, and nobody will pretend otherwise.

Where it is, and getting there

Botubarani sits on the coast road east of Gorontalo city in Bone Bolango regency. It is a genuine village, not a resort: a beach, a line of small boats, a ticket hut and the families who run the whole operation between them.

Gorontalo has its own airport, Djalaluddin (GTO), with domestic connections through Makassar and Manado. From the terminal it is roughly an hour by car to Botubarani, or half an hour if you are already staying in the city. Any driver will know it, and hotels arrange the run without much fuss.

Go early. The site opens at six and the water is calmest and clearest in the first hours, before the wind gets up and before the day's visitors have churned the shallows.

What it costs: the full price list

The village publishes its rates, which is refreshingly unusual, and they are low enough that the flight is by far the biggest line in your budget. Everything below is per item, and you assemble what you want.

A full day for two people doing it properly, boat and snorkelling and gear, lands around IDR 300,000 to 400,000 (about $17 to $22) between you. Operators in Gorontalo city will package the same thing with hotel transfers and photography for IDR 850,000 (about $47) per person, which buys convenience rather than access.

When to go, and what hours

May to July is when the guides see the most animals, and April through June is the window most often recommended for calm, clear conditions. Outside that, sightings continue but thin out, and August visitors frequently report a single shark rather than a group.

Opening hours run 06:00 to 11:30, then a break, then 12:30 to 17:00 WITA. Fridays shift for prayers: 06:00 to 10:00, then closed until 13:00. Aim for the first slot on any day.

What it is actually like in the water

Whale sharks are enormous and entirely harmless, filter feeders with no interest in you whatsoever. The first one that swims past at arm's length rearranges your sense of scale permanently. They move slowly, but a slow whale shark still outpaces a swimming human without effort, so you get your look as it passes rather than following it.

Visibility here is decent rather than spectacular, and the water is often busy with small fish drawn by the same feed. You do not need to be a strong swimmer for the shallow, close encounters, but a mask that fits and fins make the difference between a glimpse and a proper look. No certification is needed for snorkelling; diving is available for those who have it.

Bring a rash vest rather than sunscreen. Sun cream washes off into water that animals are feeding in, and most guides would rather you covered up. A wetsuit or swim top is on the hire list at IDR 50,000 (about $3) if you have not packed one.

Expect a morning rather than a day. Boats go out in short rotations, the encounter itself is usually thirty to sixty minutes in the water, and by late morning the wind has picked up and the light has gone flat. Most people are back in Gorontalo city for lunch.

The feeding question, honestly

You should know before you go that the sharks at Botubarani are fed. A bag of feed is a paid item on the village price list, and the animals come alongside boats because there is food there. This is not a secret; it is the business model, and it is how a shy pelagic species ends up 25 metres from a beach at a fixed time each morning.

Whether that troubles you is a fair question with no settled answer. Provisioning changes behaviour and can concentrate animals unnaturally; it also gives a village a reason to protect a species that was once caught. What is not in dispute are the rules that come with it: do not touch the animals, do not chase them, do not use flash, and stay out of the path of the mouth and tail. Guides here enforce this, and a whale shark's skin carries a mucus layer that damages on contact.

If provisioned encounters are not for you, this is worth knowing early rather than at the beach. The reefs at Olele Marine Park down the same coast are outstanding and entirely wild, and make a better day for anyone who would rather see animals on their own terms.

What else is worth the flight

Gorontalo is not on the standard Sulawesi circuit, which is most of its appeal. The reason divers come is Olele Marine Park, along the same stretch of coast: steep walls, hard coral in good condition, and the sponge everyone comes to photograph, a Petrosia lignosa whose markings have earned it the name Salvador Dali. It is one of the better wall dives in Indonesia and it sees a fraction of the traffic Bunaken does.

The city itself is small, cheap and unbothered by tourism. There are guesthouses and a few mid-range hotels near the centre, all within half an hour of Botubarani, and eating out costs what it costs anywhere in provincial Sulawesi. Two nights covers a whale shark morning and a day of diving comfortably; three lets you go back if the first morning is quiet.

Cash, again, matters more than it does in Bali. ATMs exist in the city and not at the beach, and everything at Botubarani is settled in rupiah on the spot.

Making a trip of it

Gorontalo on its own is a long way to fly for one morning. It works far better as the opening of a Sulawesi route, and it sits in reach of two very different things: the reefs of Olele and Bunaken up the coast, and the Banggai islands and Paisupok lake to the south around Luwuk.

That second pairing is the one most people underestimate. Paisupok is a freshwater lake so clear the boats look suspended, and it is a day's travel rather than another flight across the country.
