How to get to Raja Ampat step by step: fly to Sorong, the Waisai ferry, the boat to your homestay, the park fee, and how long it all takes.
Getting to Raja Ampat is not technically hard, but the handoffs matter. The normal route is a flight to Sorong, a public ferry to Waisai, and a final boat arranged by your homestay, resort, or liveaboard. Miss one connection and the delay can cost a night, so plan the chain instead of only the flight.

Nearly every Raja Ampat trip funnels through Sorong, the gateway city on the Papua mainland, and Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ). There are no normal international arrivals into Raja Ampat itself, so most travelers route through Jakarta, Makassar, or sometimes Bali before the domestic leg to Sorong. Keep a buffer if you are arriving internationally and changing to a separate domestic ticket.
From Sorong, the express ferry crosses to Waisai, the main town on Waigeo. The ride is usually about two hours in calm seas. Recent 2026 public updates show a mixed schedule, with 9am and 2pm departures on some days and only the 2pm boat on others, but this is exactly the kind of information that changes. Before you lock flights, verify the current ferry day and time with your accommodation or local operator.
| Leg | How | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home → Jakarta or Bali | International flight | Varies | - |
| Jakarta / Bali → Sorong (SOQ) | Domestic flight | ~4h from Jakarta | Book ahead |
| Sorong airport → ferry port | Car / taxi | ~15 to 20 min | A few dollars |
| Sorong → Waisai | Express ferry | ~2 hours | Recent economy fare around IDR 125k |
| Waisai → your homestay | Pre-arranged boat | 30 min to 2 hours | Shared, varies |
Waisai is not the destination; it is the staging post. From here a boat carries you out to your homestay or liveaboard, anywhere from half an hour to two hours away depending on which island you have chosen. This is the leg people forget to plan, and it matters, because boats are not waiting at the dock on spec. Tell your homestay your ferry arrival time in advance and ask them to have a boat ready, or you may sit in Waisai longer than you would like.
Arrange your pickup before you travel
Message your homestay with your exact ferry arrival and ask them to meet you at Waisai. Boats are arranged per guest, not hailed on arrival, so a pre-booked pickup is the difference between a smooth transfer and a long wait.
Current official sources split Raja Ampat entry into two checks: the marine park entry card and the SIPARI visitor registration/levy. For international visitors, the marine card is listed at IDR 700,000 and SIPARI lists a visitor levy of IDR 1,000,000. Keep proof of payment and recheck both sources close to departure.
From most countries, budget a day and a half to two days door to door, often with an overnight in Jakarta, Bali, or Sorong because the connections rarely align perfectly. The flights are the big expense; the ferry and transfers are minor by comparison. Build in buffer time at every change, and do not schedule anything tight on either end.
Three things save trouble out here. Carry plenty of cash in rupiah, because there are no ATMs in Raja Ampat and cards are close to useless. Pack light enough to lift on and off small boats yourself. And give yourself a margin everywhere, since a delayed flight or a missed ferry has a way of cascading.
