Float on an inner tube through a 300-meter river cave lit by shafts from the roof.
Goa Pindul is a water-filled cave in Gunung Kidul where the activity is cave tubing: you sit in an inner tube and drift along an underground river while a guide pulls and steers the group through the dark. The passage runs about 300 meters and takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour, passing stalactites, stalagmites, and one wide chamber where light pours through a collapsed section of roof.
It is a gentle, family-friendly trip rather than an adrenaline one. The current is slow, you wear a life jacket and helmet, and there is little real difficulty.
Because it is easy and cheap, Pindul is popular with Indonesian tour groups, so it can feel busy and a bit processed, with tubes bunched together at the popular spots.
Getting there
Goa Pindul is about 1.5 to 2 hours by road east of Yogyakarta, near Wonosari in Gunung Kidul. Most visitors come by hired car with driver or on a tour, often combined with other Gunung Kidul caves or beaches. You buy a tubing package at one of the local operators at the entrance, which includes the equipment and guide.
Best time
The dry season, April to October, keeps the water calm and clear; heavy rain can raise the river level and occasionally suspends trips for safety. Go early in the day to get ahead of the domestic tour groups that fill up midday.
Good to know
The tubing fee is low (around IDR 40,000 to 50,000 per person plus a small area contribution), but you typically need a minimum group, so solo travelers may join others. Bring a waterproof bag or leave valuables in the car, and expect to get fully wet.
Not really. You float in an inner tube with a life jacket and helmet, guided the whole way, and the current is gentle. It suits non-swimmers and families with older children.
The float through the cave itself is about 45 minutes to an hour over roughly 300 meters. Allow extra time for changing, briefing, and the short walk to and from the river.
It can be, as it is a cheap and easy trip popular with Indonesian tour groups. Arriving early in the morning gives you a quieter run before the buses arrive.
