About Mbokita and Sombori Reef Snorkelling
The reefs around Sombori are shallow, calm and easy to reach, which makes this more of a casual snorkel than a technical dive trip. The rainbow stilt village of Mbokita is a popular base, with coral and fish right off the jetty, so you can step in from the boat and start drifting over the reef straight away.
Other reliable spots sit near Gua Berlian (Diamond Cave) and along Pantai Pasir Panjang on the Labengki side, where you will see colourful reef fish and patches of hard and soft coral in the shallows.
This is a snorkelling area first. There is no established dive shop on the islands, so if you want scuba you generally need to arrange tanks and a guide in advance through a Kendari or Morowali operator rather than turning up and renting gear.
Getting there
Reached only by boat, the reefs are visited on island-hopping days during a multi-day trip. Most trips run from Kendari, with a 40 minute drive to Tanasa Port and then about one hour by speedboat (around two and a half hours by wooden boat), while some start from the Morowali and Bungku side; in all cases it is several hours by boat to reach the area. Your boat moves between snorkel stops through the day.
Best time
Late morning to early afternoon gives the best light and clearest water for snorkelling. The dry season, roughly April to November, brings calmer seas and better visibility than the wetter, windier months.
Good to know
Bring or confirm your own mask and fins, as rental quality on the islands is hit or miss. Use reef-safe sunscreen or a rash vest, do not touch or stand on the coral, and arrange scuba in advance if diving matters to you, since there is no walk-in dive centre.
