About Gili Air
Gili Air is the compromise island, and it is the one a lot of people end up wishing they had booked in the first place. It has more going on than near-silent Gili Meno and far less of the party machinery than Gili Trawangan, and it is the closest of the three to Lombok, which gives it a real resident population rather than a purely tourist one.
That matters to how the place feels. Away from the seafront strip the interior is coconut palms, family compounds, goats and washing lines, and the ring road turns quickly from beach cafes into a functioning village. It is the only one of the three islands with its own subterranean fresh water, which is part of why a permanent community settled here at all.
The activity concentrates on the east and south-east shores, where the beach swings, cafes and sunset bars sit facing Lombok and the bulk of Mount Rinjani behind it. Walk ten minutes in either direction from that strip and it goes quiet. Like the other Gilis, motor vehicles are banned, so it is bicycles, feet and cidomo horse carts.
The snorkelling is the other reason to choose it. Reef and turtles start close to shore off the eastern and northern beaches, reachable without a boat, and the full island loop is a comfortable walk or an easy cycle. Some of the loop is soft sand where a bicycle becomes a burden rather than a help.
Getting there
Fast boats run from several ports in Bali to Gili Air, typically taking between one and a half and two and a half hours depending on the departure point and conditions. It is also the shortest local-boat hop from Bangsal harbour on Lombok, which makes it the natural choice if you are arriving from or continuing into Lombok. Boats land on the main south-east beach near the cafes. Crossings from Bali are open water and can be rough, and services are sometimes cancelled in poor weather. Allow buffer time around onward flights rather than connecting on the same day.
Best time
The dry season, roughly May to September, has the calmest seas and the best snorkelling visibility. Late afternoon on the east-side beach bars catches the sunset over Lombok with Rinjani behind it. Gili Air stays relatively relaxed even in the July and August peak, which is one of its advantages over Trawangan.
Good to know
Bring cash from the mainland. ATMs across the Gilis are scarce and unreliable, and Gili Air is no exception, so carry enough for your stay and keep a card only as a backup. A bicycle makes the quieter west side easy to reach, though parts of the loop are deep soft sand where you will end up pushing. It sits between the two in pace. It is livelier and better served than very quiet Meno, but much more low-key than party-focused Trawangan. It also has the strongest local community feel of the three, helped by being the closest to Lombok and the only one with its own subterranean fresh water.
