Rolling green tea estates on the cool highlands south of Bandung around Rancabali.
The highlands around Ciwidey and Rancabali, south of Bandung, are carpeted with tea, neat rows of bushes following the contours of the hills. The Rancabali and Walini estates are the easiest to enjoy, with roadside viewpoints, walking paths between the rows, and pickers at work in the cooler hours. At around 1,500 meters the air is fresh and often misty, a real break from Bandung's heat.
The area has filled in with photo spots and small attractions: a glamping resort, the Situ Patenggang lake with its 'Love Island', and viewpoints set up for selfies.
Many travelers fold the tea fields into the same day as Kawah Putih, since both lie along the same road up from Bandung.
Getting there
The Ciwidey and Rancabali tea estates are about 45 to 50 km south of Bandung, roughly 2 to 3 hours by car in typical traffic. Most visitors come by private car or tour, often paired with Kawah Putih, which sits on the same route. There is no convenient public transport beyond piecing together angkots.
Best time
Early morning in the dry season (April to October) gives the clearest light, active tea pickers, and the lowest chance of afternoon mist and rain. Weekdays are calmer than weekends, when locals fill the lakeside and photo spots.
Good to know
Combine the tea fields with Kawah Putih to make the long drive worthwhile, and start early to beat both the heat lower down and the return traffic. Bring a light layer for the cool highland air and small cash for the various viewpoint and parking fees.
